Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Zondervan Handbook to the Bible, a thoroughly revised version of the classic Eerdmans Handbook to the Bible, is an authoritative, clearly written, chapter-by-chapter guide to every book in the Bible. Lavishly illustrated with colorful maps, charts, photographs, and illustrations, this volume is an excellent resource for students of Scripture who crave a concrete sense of what the Garden of Gethsemane looks like, for example, or a handy reference to the duties of priesthood in the First Temple. In-depth articles by leading biblical scholars will lead curious readers to the best resources for further study, and a "Rapid Fact-Finder" in the back of the book is helpful for quick reference. Previous editions of the Handbook have been praised by leading conservative Christian writers, including Charles W. Colson and F.F. Bruce, and this new edition will surely nourish the next generation of Christians who follow in their footsteps. Zondervan handbook for the Bible | Customer Rating: | | I wasn't happy with this book because it was shown on Amazon as a 2005 edition and when I received it the ISBN # was different than was shown on Amazon and the edition was 1999. I had to return it. | Nice Pictures but Serious Scriptural Inaccuracies | Customer Rating: | This book has nice pictures and exhibits but has seriously inaccurate information regarding Scripture. For example, on Page 527 it refers to the Israelites as "Jews".
The Bible never refers to the Israelites as Jews. Jacob, whom GOD re-named to "Israel," had twelve sons and grandsons who would form the twelve houses of Israel. They were:
1. Reuben 2. Simeon 3. Judah 4. Issachar 5. Zebulun 6. Dan 7. Naphtali 8. Gad 9. Asher 10. Benjamin 11. Ephraim 12. Manasseh
The houses of Judah and Benjamin merged into the southern kingdom. They were just called "Judah" after that.
About 1,000 years later the nation of Judah had become multi-cultural. They were no longer just Judeans - they were a nation that also included Caannites, Hittites, Moabites, etc. Citizens of the whole mix were simply called "Jews."
The Judeans were the Israelites in the composition of peoples known as Jews. The Bible never refers to the other ten houses or Israelite nations as "Jews."
Also, this book does not mention GODS covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. GODS covenant includes promises that their descendants will form a "multitude of nations" and that their descendants will be as "numerous as the sands of the sea."
Considering GODS covenant with Abraham, Issac, and Jacob is one of the foundational premises of the Bible it is stunning that Zondervan would omit mention of it.
This book has a litany of contributors and authors. Most of them have advanced degrees. It is odd that with all of those smart people that this book could have key inaccuracies.
When you look at who owns Zondervan, however, it becomes a little more clear why the book is inaccurate. It is owned by a political organization.
Zondervan was purchased by HarperCollins Publishers in the year 1988. HarperCollins Publishers is a subsidiary of News Corporation. News Corporation is a huge conglomerate that owns, among many other outlets, cable news network Fox News. Fox News is known for their biased news reporting. | Zondervan Handbook to the Bible: Complete Revised and Updated Edition of the Three-Million-Copy Bestseller (Purchased on 04/20/2 | Customer Rating: | | This book is a great resource to enhance Bible Study.
