Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Revised by celebrated novelist and short-fiction writer Richard Bausch, this edition continues to offer the most exciting blend of contemporary and classic short stories in a portable format. 135 stories—34 of them new to this edition—by 114 authors are lightly supplemented by a general introduction, biographical notes, and essays written for the benefit of beginning writers. Selections of Literary Merit | Customer Rating: | | This book was definitely worth it. It includes many important fiction writers and is a good tool to have for aspiring writers. These are great authors to model after and borrow techniques from. | When you run out of Ritalin . . . | Customer Rating: | | You're probably buying this for a class in school, right? Well even if you drop out of the class because the teacher is some blathering bore and you just can't sit still that long because you ran out of ritalin and don't plan on refilling your prescription any time soon, KEEP THE BOOK. It has some of the greatest short stories ever written. And the range is amazing. Most of the stories will never feel dated. Stick it by your bed. Pick it up in the middle of the night when you can't sleep and your head is spinning. Read "Signs and Symbols" by Nabokov. You'll be stunned. Still can't sleep? Flip to Carver's "Cathedral." This book will keep you going for years, as you'll want to read many of the stories over and over again. | Great anthology, but one minor complaint about this edition | Customer Rating: | Yet another wonderful Norton anthology, but I have only one disappointment: this "shorter seventh edition" excludes "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, which was in the "shorter sixth edition." This is a classic short story and I can't quite get my head around as to why they chose to omit this of all stories from this edition. :-( This was one (of many) reasons I ordered this book-- I didn't imagine they'd pull that story...
There are a few nice additions however, such as more than one story now by O'Connor and Faulkner (I don't believe "A Rose for Emily" was in the sixth edition).
All my whinging aside, you can't go wrong with Norton's. It's still one of the better anthologies. | Comprehensive Collection | Customer Rating: | | This volume is a comprehensive collection of short fiction that gives the reader a clear view of the canon of short fiction. Richard Bausch has also collected a wide range of short pieces on writing fiction that offer insights into the art and process of fiction. A great collection! | Excellent | Customer Rating: | | Product delivered on time and in good condition. Great seller, would buy again! |
