Not for the beginner- but if you need it, buy it from this vendor on Amazon
First the vendor - description was accurate and delivery was quick. This is a solid, professional - the kind of vendor I want to work with. Now the book. This manual is not for the beginner. It would be useful to be well-acquainted with HTML, JavaScript, ASP.Net and other technical "stuff". This book is for advanced design work and probably for designers with some formal training and substantial experience.
Unfortunately, I have not found a truly comprehensive refrence manual. "Expression Web 3 - On Demand" is a step in that direction but far from the good old 1,000+ page manual those of us who wish to do wonderous things with limited knowledge and training have come to depend on. "Front Page Inside Out" by Microsoft was such a manual. Where is microsoft when you need them? I still find portions of "Inside Out" are useful for reference when using Expression Web 3 but I doubt it would help much if you hadn't used Front Page a fair amount.
If anyone locates a good general reference manual of the 1,000+ page variety, sing out to the rest of us. In the meantime, designers with intermediate to advanced training and experience should consider purchasing "Expression Web 3- In Depth". If you do use it, I recommend ordering it from this vendor." Best wishes.
Very good book... poor production values.
This is the second of Cue's 'In Depth' books I have puchased. I really like how these books are laid out and their practical content. In this particular book, the screen shots are often very dark (this is partly blamed on the dark interface of the software itself) and in may cases blurry, as if overprinted slightly out of register. Many of the screen shots are excellent, though, so I think the printer or publisher is to blame for these difficulties. Should the author, Jim Cheshire, do a follow-up book on version 4, I would be sure to look the content over carefully before purchase. Cheshire's content is really well done; no issues.
That said, this book will be a great introduction to the software for persons who have used other WYSIWIG web design software (Dreamweaver). It may be tougher slog for someone starting out as a beginner. I did not see any experience level guidelines as some other technical books have. However, with the book open at your side, you should be able to follow along easily and such time will be well spent although perhaps slow.
The publisher has a direct request for comments on quality issues, which will be my next e-mail
5 stars but for the printing
This is a great book and other reviewers will tell you why. The only reason I put a review here is to warn the potential buyer to check the quality of the figures printed in the book. No text should get to the public in this condition of my copy, where the figures are often at best fuzzy and at worst so bad that the text within them cannot be read. Most often this happens in figures printed on the right side as you hold the book open in front of you and a quick leafing thought the book will reveal it.
This is the fault of the publisher, not the author, who has done an outstanding job only to have it sabotaged. My copy is the first printing, October 2009
Awesome Expression Web 3 book
Great book. Well written and easy to understand. You will definitely keep going back to this book as a reference. Worth the money, would highly recommend it to anyone moving to or using Expression Web 3. If you cannot build a website in Expression Web 3 after reading this book, it ain't the book. :-)
Confused
I have tried to understand and follow this book. I cannot. It is confusing. If you are not a web guru this book is not for you. It assumes you know a lot and leaves you wondering what the heck is going on.
I have tried to follow examples in the book but I don't see what he says I should see. I gave up and am looking for something easier to follow.
I have limited experience but I have done several webs in Frontpage.
