Not as good as Lonely Planet
I usually purchase Lonely Planet guides when I travel, but it happened that the Frommer's Cancun guide was written 2 years earlier so I purchased this one instead. The guide is written well and it comes with a map. However, I feel that compared to Lonely Planet, this guide was lacking crucial food and restaurant reviews. The sections that listed the restaurants were all too pricey for a student/backpacker's budget. I was also disappointed with the lack of Mexican or Yucatanean restaurants listed in the book. There were maybe 1 or 2 listed out of 10, the rest were "International" restaurants aka Italian, American, Thai, etc. The same goes for tourist sites and things to do - again too pricey.
I realize that Cancun is not the cheapest place in the world, however after wondering around on my own without the guide and looking at various travel blogs, I found cheaper restaurants and cheaper things to do. I prefer Lonely Planet because it seems that the book is written for low budget travellers. Also, the maps in Lonely Planet focus on specific areas of a region, so it is more detailed. With the Frommer's Guide, although it had a map, I had to get a more detailed one listing streets in the Cancun area from my hotel front desk.
Overall, the book is fine if you have a big budget for Cancun and you want to stay within the tourist area, but if you are a low-budget traveller that is looking for a more authentic experience, go with Lonely Planet. Lonely Planet, just update your book (I think at least a new Mexico guide is coming out soon for 2010)!!
Frommer's cancun, Cozumel and the Yucatan 2010
Item arrived in excellent condition and was worth the purchase. It helped us on our trip quite a bit, as the information was helpful. Thanks to the seller. The following comments are for Frommer:As always, sometimes the prices where a little off, on both sides, sometimes they where a little higher and sometime a little lower. I would recommend to Frommer to research options for getting to and from the hotel in Cancun as when we arrived at the airport this June 2010 you have many taxi options to get to your hotel. And all the services are barking out their services. Options such as riding in a shared van that drop off passengers at different hotels vs. getting an individual taxi are a better option, and how to get around the hotel via the local air conditioned tourist bus vs. the hotel taxi is an option that will save the tourist a lot of money for trip activities. Also using the local ADO bus instead of a bus tour will also save a lot of money.
Frommer's Cancun Guide
THe book is probably fine but it took 30 days to get it and it came after I left for vacation. I had no use for it after the fact!
Great Information!
This is a great summary of some of the best places to visit, stay and eat!
Helped plan that perfect vacation
One of the best researched guide on the market. Fodor's Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan Peninsula 2010 (Fodor's Gold Guides) proved invaluable to our family during our trip through the Yucatan. No matter what your budget, this little gem has advice for you. It also offers valuable advice on its own website along with blogs and traveler's experiences. Fodor's Cancun is updated yearly to keep us travelers informed with the latest details to plan that perfect vacation. I would also highly recommend Frommer's Cancun & the Yucatan Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) as a pocket guide for your day-to-day planning.
