Average Rating:
This is Not a guidebook.
Badly organized--like an encyclopedia on Egypt and the main (obvious) touristy areas to go, with specific recommendations on restaurants and hotels at the very back of the book and not within each major destination section. Even there, the comments about each hotel and restaurant are just okay with not enough low budget options. Each page is PACKED with information and it's overwhelming, a lot of it is repeated over and over throughout the book - when I just want information quickly. The font is too small in some places where there are THREE columns on one page! It's too much and it makes finding answers too difficult when you need it fast. There are pretty pictures that take up two pages, when I'd rather save the weight on my pack and have useful information.. which this book doesn't have much of! This is a pretty glossy book, but it's supposed to be a travel guide, not something to sit on your coffee table to tell your friends "I want to go to Egypt someday!"
I want a travel guide that suggests the hidden gems of an area, this doesn't do that AT ALL. For the broad overviews that this book provides, I can do a fast google search and get better and more accurate information. For example, this book suggests credit cards aren't widely accepted, but Wikipedia Travel, message boards, and people living there say that isn't true (except for the most rural areas).
Want to go SCUBA diving? Great--there's a directory list of outdoor activities that includes some diving clubs (listed in the index under Diving and not SCUBA) but no price estimates or reviews of the places it lists, and it doesn't even say where the dive shop is located. Somewhere in Egypt! What? Instead, there's a beautiful page with pictures about all the sea-life you might see. Pretty, but not useful! Very Important information, like the proper amounts of tipping for specific activities is hidden in a small 4 inch long narrow column at the back of the book and only gives 3 or 4 examples, but tipping is an important part of Egyptian customs and should have been highlighted and easier to find. Maybe a tipping bar listing suggestions for several common actions that you should tip for--calling a taxi, carrying luggage, opening a door, pushing an elevator button (you can find this on WIkipedia travels page).
When I'm actually in Egypt this book might be helpful, but it takes too long to get information, long introductions and descriptions rather than providing useful and fast info., am I going to want to carry it around? Will it be better than the local brochures? I research which guidebook I wanted, chose the one with the best recommendations, so maybe this is the best one out there (there are a lot of complaints that there isn't a good one for Egypt). But, you're probably better off picking up brochures in English (or just going on the really inexpensive tours!) while you're in Egypt or going to the wikitravel page and printing it off to take with you.
Save $17. I wish I had.
Egypt
A travel guide that goes into great detail and is full of beautiful pictures. The most informative and complete I have found.
Our trip to Egypt
It was very informative when we were reviewing our vacation and the photos we had taken. The pictures in the book are beautiful.
Beautiful but not enough content
Purchased this book for our recent trip to Egypt, it's beautiful as they all are, but I don't believe they include enough content as say Frommer's or Rick Steve's books.
I love the pictures, but if I was going somewhere and needed an in depth guide I would not get it.
Egypt(eyewitness guide)
Went to Egypt (08). Wish we would of had book before trip. We really enjoyed trip, but we would known what to expect and ask while on our guided trip. Hope to go back.
