Summary

In THE DEMON AWAKENS, bestselling author R. A. Salvatore creates an astonishing new world for readers to explore--and an intrepid hero to lead the way: Elbryan Wynden, who must confront the dark tides of destiny in his epic search for justice and peace . . .

A great evil has awakened in the land of Corona, a terrible demon determined to spread death and misery. His goblin armies and fearsome giants ravage the settlements of the frontier, and in the small village of Dundallis their merciless attack leaves behind two shattered orphans: Pony and her lifelong friend, the youth Elbryan. Taken in by elves, Elbryan is raised to become a formidable ranger--a fateful role that will lead him into harrowing confrontation.

Meanwhile, on a far-off island, a shower of gemstones will fall onto the black sand shores. These heaven-sent stones carry within them an incredible power--the key to all that is good in the world and all that is evil, and it is up to one young monk to liberate them from the corrupt monastery that harvests them. Pray that they don't fall into the wrong, clawed hands . . .

Good Beginning

Rating: Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2

I liked the beginning of the book, but then i just got bored once all the characters found eachother. Who knows if i'll ever finish it. At least it was free.

As If written by a talented high school student

Rating: Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2

Not only does the book seem to be aimed at a late-teen audience, it almost feels as if it is written by one.

Fight scenes are described in excruciating detail that blunts the emotional impact of what is happening. (I imagine Jon Heders' Napoleon Dynamite giving similar fight descriptions to his friends standing by their lockers before class.) Unfortunately, he applies the same detail to love scenes, which end up seeming embarrassingly robotic. (He moved his hand here, then he did this with his tongue...)

(Mini Spoiler) I was doing fine with the book until about 3/4th of the way through when he invokes Deus Ex Machina and has a previously unseen herd of wild horses stampede into the middle of a battle to overcome the Goblin Horde. Honestly, I was starting to have problems before this, with the character of Pony who almost seems to exist as a way to broaden the books appeal for female readers. She is a beautiful, unrealistic fantasy bimbo, with a stereotypical troubled past, haunted by the attention she receives from men. Later, without significant martial training, she becomes an expert fighter. If that was not enough, in under a minute, she learns the use of high level magic through a mind-meld with a Wizard. Girl power incarnate! All I can say is wtf? So inconsistent with the hard work done by the characters Elbryan and Avelin to learn their respective crafts.

This is my first Salvatore. I chose this book based on reviews, looking to see what a competent staple writer in the fiction genre can churn out. I will not be reading more Salvatore. Also, this leads me to question the wisdom of writing for the fantasy market. The book is unintelligent and juevenile, yet it has sold well and received high reviews. Perhaps the average fantasy reader is willing to overlook the weak plot, inconsistent development, and use of Deus Ex Machina as long as their is big magic, detailed fight scenes, and a gorgeous blonde swinging a sword.

WARNING to KINDLE 2 USERS! No Text-to-speech!

Rating: Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1

This is just a notice to Kindle 2 users like me who have begun to really enjoy the Text-to-speech function of the new Kindle 2 for things like an hour long commute. This book, and apparently all of Salvatore's has the Text-to-speech function disabled. Amazon immediately refunded my purchase price w/o question (well done as usual Amazon). But, I'm still quite disappointed that such a wonderful feature would be taken away like this by a publisher. I guess I'll be reading Feist instead after all.

A solid fantasy novel with some umique elements.

Rating: Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

Another solid famtasy novel from Salvatore. At times it is a little formulaic, but it has some interesting magical elements and some unique views on elves and dwarves.

6 HOURS PLEASURE AND THRILLS TO LISTEN TO!

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

I really enjoyed this 6 hour read from my favorite audio reader - Bill Mumy! 6 hours of complete pleasure. Great storyline as well, and then having Bill read it! What more could you ask for? Bill has done R.A.Savatore proud. He brought this thriller to life! Very enjoyable in all aspects. I now collect all of Bill's readings such as SHOCK ROCK and LOST IN SPACE - THE PROMISED LAND. I can't wait until his next one! A+ for good listen and good performance!
