Summary

Coraline lives with her preoccupied parents in part of a huge old house--a house so huge that other people live in it, too... round, old former actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible and their aging Highland terriers ("We trod the boards, luvvy") and the mustachioed old man under the roof ("'The reason you cannot see the mouse circus,' said the man upstairs, 'is that the mice are not yet ready and rehearsed.'") Coraline contents herself for weeks with exploring the vast garden and grounds. But with a little rain she becomes bored--so bored that she begins to count everything blue (153), the windows (21), and the doors (14). And it is the 14th door that--sometimes blocked with a wall of bricks--opens up for Coraline into an entirely alternate universe. Now, if you're thinking fondly of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, you're on the wrong track. Neil Gaiman's Coraline is far darker, far stranger, playing on our deepest fears. And, like Roald Dahl's work, it is delicious.

What's on the other side of the door? A distorted-mirror world, containing presumably everything Coraline has ever dreamed of... people who pronounce her name correctly (not "Caroline"), delicious meals (not like her father's overblown "recipes"), an unusually pink and green bedroom (not like her dull one), and plenty of horrible (very un-boring) marvels, like a man made out of live rats. The creepiest part, however, is her mirrored parents, her "other mother" and her "other father"--people who look just like her own parents, but with big, shiny, black button eyes, paper-white skin... and a keen desire to keep her on their side of the door. To make creepy creepier, Coraline has been illustrated masterfully in scritchy, terrifying ink drawings by British mixed-media artist and Sandman cover illustrator Dave McKean. This delightful, funny, haunting, scary as heck, fairy-tale novel is about as fine as they come. Highly recommended. (Ages 11 and older) --Karin Snelson

I was highly impressed with Gaiman`s portrayal of the other mother and the other world. the thought of having a world that seem`s better than your`s is highlt intreauging. i would highly recomend this book.

A deliciously creepy delight!

I'm slightly biased because I think Neil Gaiman is an incredible author and I enjoy any work he has done. Coraline in particular was just fantastic. I saw the movie first, which I'm a little upset at myself about (I almost never watch a movie before I read a book) but I was pleased with both variations of the story.

I also must say the artwork was very nice to have. I found myself studying the artwork thoroughly as I encountered it in the text. The artwork really complimented the darkness of the story and made it even more creepy than it already was (if that's even possible).

This is a very quick read - I finished it in only a day. It is very difficult to put down - which was kind of depressing for me in the end because I wanted to read more! The last 10% of the book contains a "why did you write Coraline" and "Neil Gaiman Q&A" which was short and refreshing as well. Really get your money's worth with this one!

Book = awesome. Movie = not so much.

I saw the movie. I read the book. Skip the movie.

The book is deliciously fun to read. Gaiman can pack more info in a sentence than most writers can pack into a chapter. The best thing about this book was though it was a "kids" book, the danger and the threats were very real: you got a sense that maybe the main character was in over her head, and maybe she wouldn't come out of it. This was very much darker than other YA/kids books like Fablehaven or Billy: Messenger of Powers, but it was a great read. Lots and lots of fun... just be sure to read with the lights on.

If you liked the movie, you'll like the book better!

I saw the movie before reading the book, so I knew to expect a creepy kid's story.

While not as scary or creepy as I was expecting it to be (I read reviews stating that the book is sooooo much creepier than the movie!), there were a few parts in the book that weren't in the movie and added to the creepiness of the story.

If you like weird creepy kid books, don't miss this one by Neil Gaiman!

5 Star book!

I saw the movie and liked it a lot so I thought I'd give the book a try. The book was even better! The descriptions of the chatacters and scenes were so excelent that it felt like I were watching a movie! This horror book isn't "horrifying" so it's not the book to get if you're looking to be freaked out but that makes it makes it great for younger audiences. Unlike most books, Coraline has a unique storyline. There's no stereotypical zombies, vampires or monsters, but there is the nefarious "other" mother and her right hand. Once again, Neil Gaiman proves himself by writing another truly captivating book!
