Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
Summary?Andrew Bacevich speaks truth to power, no matter who?s in power, which may be why those of both the left and right listen to him.??Bill Moyers An immediate New York Times bestseller, The Limits of Power offers an unparalleled examination of the profound triple crisis facing America: an economy in disarray that can no longer be fixed by relying on expansion abroad; a government transformed by an imperial presidency into a democracy in name only; and an engagement in endless wars that has severely undermined the body politic. Writing with knowledge born of experience, conservative historian and former military officer Andrew J. Bacevich argues that if the nation is to solve its predicament, it will need the revival of a distinctly American approach: the neglected tradition of realism. In contrast to the multiple illusions that have governed American policy since 1945, he calls for respect for power and its limits; aversion to claims of exceptionalism; skepticism of easy solutions, especially those involving force; and a conviction that Americans must live within their means. Only a return to such principles, Bacevich eloquently argues, can provide common ground for fixing America?s urgent problems before the damage becomes irreparable. |

The Limits Of [U.S.] Power
The author, Andrew Bacevich is a retired Army Colonel and a Professor of History and International Relations at Boston University.
He takes a critical look at the brutal actions the U.S. is conducting in Iraq and elsewhere and the vast spending in lives and money this is costing. And he raises a series of sharp questions about what can possibly be attained and what is being and has been lost.
At 182 pages, it's a quick read and a real eye opener for anyone trying to understand the U.S. war machine and its impact
Reality-based perspective on America's leadership in the world
In this book, the author takes a three-dimensional view of contemporary society: Economics and culture, politics and the military. On all three he takes a dim view of how the Baby-boomer generation has conducted itself as steward of its inherited wealth and values. He links our profligate appetite for consumption of goods that are made elsewhere to the politics of tax cuts, deficits and debt and a military class that is driven by politics and political correctness. Along all three dimensions there is an absence of curiosity to ask the fundamental questions and to question assumptions that are no longer valid. The net result is an America that is not what it thinks it is: our economy is in a shambles with moentary and fiscal policies that prusue goals opposite of what they should be pursuing, our political system has become dysfunctional (driven by corruption) and our military lacks the standards of excellence that were so obviously engrained in a previous generation. America's ruling elites have given in to systemic selfishness and greed, have squandered our inheritance (material and spiritual) from previous generations and as a result we have lost our right to leadership of the world. The author argues his case with an intellectual honesty and discipline that is rare among his contemporaries.
No limits...
Every American should be required to..get a passport and fill it with stamps, then read this book.
Thought Provoking
If you are an ideologue at either end of the political spectrum, unwilling to consider cold facts about the American political system and its international policy, Andrew Bacevich's book may not be for you. He reminds us of things that we don't necessarily want to hear and points out the flaws in the country's past administrations from both parties since the middle of the last century, supported by facts and logic. Bacevich is a Professor of History at Boston University, a retired Army Colonel, and he lost a son in Iraq, so his perspective is more than academic. I am a retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel, serving during the last 28 years of the Cold War and spent a year in Vietnam, and I must say that I found very little with which to disagree in Bacevich's work. I'm hoping that some in our current administration have read this book.
