Summary

Conservative talk radio's fastest-growing superstar is also a New York Times bestselling phenomenon: the author of the groundbreaking critique of the Supreme Court, Men in Black, and the deeply personal dog lover's memoir Rescuing Sprite, Mark R. Levin now delivers the book that characterizes both his devotion to his more than 5 million listeners and his love of our country and the legacy of our Founding Fathers: Liberty and Tyranny is Mark R. Levin's clarion call to conservative America, a new manifesto for the conservative movement for the 21st century.

In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has steadily snowballed since President Roosevelt's New Deal of the 1930s and resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for re-enforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. Conservative beliefs in individual freedoms do in the end stand for liberty for all Americans, while liberal dictates lead to the breakdown of civilized society -- in short, tyranny. Looking back to look to the future, Levin writes "conservatism is the antidote to tyranny precisely because its principles are our founding principles." And in a series of powerful essays, Levin lays out how conservatives can counter the liberal corrosion that has filtered into every timely issue affecting our daily lives, from the economy to health care, global warming, immigration, and more -- and illustrates how change, as seen through the conservative lens, is always prudent, and always an enhancement to individual freedom.

As provocative, well-reasoned, robust, and informed as his on-air commentary, Levin's narrative will galvanize readers to begin a new era in conservative thinking and action. Liberty and Tyranny provides a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for revitalizing the conservative vision and ensuring the preservation of American society.

Required Reading

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto" should be required reading for every registered voter. His facts are documented and foot noted and his opinions are reasonable and rational results of his research. We have the government we deserve because our electorate is uninformed, lazy, and too comfortable. Reading this book would at least help to inform.

Meticulous, logical, and well-written

Bought the hardback. Then bought the Kindle version so I could pass the hardback around.

Meticulously researched, eloquently written, and perfectly timed

It's hard not to say what's already been said. But for me, Liberty and Tyranny serves as one of my go-to resources for political philosophy. Mark Levin surgically deconstructs the opposition's arguments and proves them inaccurate on every point.

This was the perfect book for me given my circumstances. Before I cracked its spine, I had my beliefs but not why I believed them other than tradition and personal sentiments towards an ever-increasing regulatory state. I gladly passed it on to my grandfather, a Korean War veteran.

A US Citizen Requirement

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Mark Levin takes a subject that is inherently dry and turns it into a "page turner". If you care about our country and want to understand what made it so great, and ways to keep it great, then you need to read this book. It should be required reading in all of our schools. Whether you are liberal or conservative in your thinking, you should read this book, only if it is the first two chapters. I have read the entire book twice.

Makes some good points, but libertarian he ain't

Rating: Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3

To be kind, in (what Rand used to refer to as) "the intellectual bankruptcy of our age," any literary or mildly conceptual assertion of liberty, however limited, must be appreciated. And Levin doesn't seem to be malicious or suppressive of the truth as he ignores the fundamental principles of liberty from the "Great Libertarian Thinkers, Writers, and Activists" of history. He is simply blithely and blissfully clueless of this vast body of freedomwork... I think.

On the other hand--and this is the perfect question for all modern "conservatives" who pose as promoters of liberty--"What's their problem with Ron Paul?" Hasn't the libertarian-Republican Congressman from Texas, among all those in positions of influence and power in our American world, best articulated the vision of freedom in our time? Why doesn't Levin even give the good doctor a mention[2]. Was Levin freeze-dried or living in a cave during the 2008 Republican primary? What sort of liberty does Levin seek if he makes no connection whatever to the only true libertarian--and I'm using libertarian in the generic sense here, as anyone who advocates/ practices liberty--in recent memory on the national political stage?!
