Really good!
Well written stories of disaster.. Followed by ways to avoid the same situations. Great tips and advice scattered throughout the book. This is a good way to learn from other peoples mistakes, before you dont live through your own...
A terrible, terrible book about ships of fools...
I got this book in this hopes that it would help refine my sea kayaking risk management and illuminate things I not yet learned. What I received were stories filled with a general lack of common sense that made my jaw drop. Here is a short, paraphrased list of some of the extremely poor decisions that blew my mind:
- "PFDs are uncomfortable and don't look cool, who needs 'em?"
- "Letting people know our itinerary is too much hassle!"
- "Hey night is falling and it's winter, let's go kayaking!"
- "Hey there's a big dark cloud on the western horizon, let's go kayaking!"
- "Hey let's go kayaking at night on a holiday in an extremely busy channel filled with large ships!"
- "Hey we have nearly no idea how to read winds, currents, or tides, let's go kayaking in a region known for its mercurial weather conditions during the change of seasons!"
All of the items above are conditions that I try to avoid. Perhaps I am not as 'adventurous' as some intrepid mariners, but my conservative approach to kayaking risk has kept me alive and in one piece for several years.
review of deep trouble
This is a must read before you do any expedition paddling. It tells it like it is, going into thought provoking analysis of incidents and accidents that have happened.
I very good do and don't book that will hopefully stop you from making the same mistakes these people made.
Should be on everyones reading list before they start out!
Great book for beginners
If you are new to kayaking on open water and have dreams about coastal paddling, you have to read this book! The concept is absolutely great!
The author collected a bunch of stories of kayaking accidents that all happened in the Pacific NorthWest, put them in a single volume and supplemented the stories with expert commentary on what went wrong and what could have been done differently.
Implementation is also very good. The book is well written, easy to read and the commentaries are very useful.
The book has limitations. First, only Pacific NorthWest is covered. Lessons learned are widely generalizable but there are potential troubles that are not covered in this book at all. Commentary gets repetitive after a while and you don't even need to be an expert paddler well familiar with sea kayaking safety to get to the point where this book does not have much to offer. Even then, the stories have enough entertainment value to keep you interested even if you don't actually learn anything new or useful.
Good cautionary tales
Well written series of stories that should provide ample motivation to any sea kayaker to prepare to be safe. If you didn't respect the risks of hypothermia before reading this book, you will after. This is not a how-to of sea kayaking rescue, although rescue attempts are a part of each story. This book gives the reasons to practice your rescues in advance until you are confident of your skills or to stay in waters within your skill level, and gives a real world sense of how to measure your skills.
