Delightfully comfortable
The small town dynamics are wonderful. The characters are likeable. The images are delightfully written.
The pace is slow enough to feel as though you are sitting around a table having a cup of coffee with the cast of characters, yet, fast enough that as you read your mind races along the twists and turns and, drawn to different paths, are never bored.
Well respected and liked, Jane Neal was 76 when she died from an arrow wound to her heart. Chief inspector of homicide Armand Gamache and his team are called to the sleepy village of Three Pines to investigate and solve the murder.
We get to know the town folk through their eyes and like a great piece of art, the layers unfold to shed light where there is darkness.
I was hooked right away and even though I wanted to know who committed the murder, I hated to see the book end.
Highly recommended.
A Mystery to the Last Page
Louise Penny is an excellent author. She writes in clear lyrical prose. Her characters are interesting, complex, likeable people; and I am never able to predict the outcome until she tells me. To find myself frequently smiling and occasionally laughting out loud, while reading a suspensful story about murder is most enteratining and unusual.
Here's a review actually based on the book...
I am dismayed at the number of reviews that disparage the quality of this book based on... untimely deliveries, the alphabetizing of the author's name and one who is insulted that the author has been compared to P.D. James, disagreeing wholeheartedly with that comparison, yet didn't even read a single chapter of the book! Pathetic individuals. First and foremost, the book is a well-paced novel that keep moving forward with great and deep characters as well as a great storyline that keeps you guessing throughout. Second, the writing style is intricately similar to P.D. James and for those who read beyond the first page of the book and are familiar with P.D., you'll realize that as well. As a reader who reads several books a week I can recommend this one. And when browsing reviews, pay attention to the ones written by people who actually read the book, not those who only alphabetize their books or read the book jacket before tossing it aside.
Still Life by Louise Penny
Wow!!! I am a fan. I love Louise Penny's writing and the Armand Gamache characters.
First Three Pines Mystery
I finished Still Life by Louise Penny and I loved every minute of it. It won a host of awards including UK Dagger, the Canadian Ellis, and American Dilys, Barry and Anthony awards. The best thing about this book, for me, is the wonderful characterization including the quite charming village of Three Pines. The main character is Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec. He comes to this lovely little hamlet to solve the murder of a gentle elderly lady. The mystery is intriguing and the writing is lovely and I would like to move to Three Pines.
