Summary

In a spellbinding blend of suspense and human drama, Danielle Steel tells a powerful and unusual story of one woman’s journey from darkness into light, as she fights to escape a mesmerizing sociopath who holds her in his thrall….

Hope Dunne has carved out a name for herself as a top photographer, known the joys of marriage and motherhood, and the heartbreak of loss. In her chic SoHo loft, Hope is content with her life, finding serenity and beauty through the lens of her camera. She isn’t looking for a man or excitement. But these things find her when she accepts a last- minute assignment to fly to London at Christmas and photograph one of the world’s most celebrated writers—an Irish-American author known for novels of thrilling literary darkness.

To Hope’s surprise, Finn O’Neill exudes warmth and a boyish charm. Enormously successful, he is a perfect counterpoint to Hope’s quiet, steady grace—and he’s taken instantly by her. He courts her as no one ever has before, whisking her away to his palatial, isolated Irish estate.

Hope finds it all, and him, irresistible. Finn’s magnetism and brilliance are undeniable. But soon cracks begin to appear in his stories: gaps in his history, a few innocent lies, and bouts of jealousy unnerve her. Suddenly Hope is both in love and suspicious, caring and deeply in doubt, and ultimately frightened of the man she loves. Alone, thousands of miles from home, her mind is reeling. Is she just being paranoid? How many lies has he told? Are there more secrets to come? Is it possible that this adoring, attentive man—like the characters in his novels—is hiding something even worse? The spell cast by a brilliant sociopath has her trapped in his web, too confused and dazzled to escape as he continues to tighten his grip on her.

With razor-sharp insight, Danielle Steel delivers an unforgettable tale of danger and obsessive love. Fearlessly telling the truth, refusing to look away, Steel proves once again that as an American storyteller she has no peer when she explores the dark secrets that sometimes lurk just below the surface of ordinary lives, writing about men and women and their courage to prevail, in this case, even in the face of evil.

Matters of the Heart

This is my FIRST Danielle Steel and if it is typical of the quality of her writing it will be my last....boringly long, repetitious ad nauseum (I was listening to it on CD so was unable to skip ahead easily without missing plot elements) it takes a supposedly intelligent, strong woman much too long to admit that her lover is bad news. Nevertheless despite being well aware of what was happening to her, Hope (cutesey name!) lingers on, succumbing to blatant pressure. I have worked with victims of spousal abuse and understand the dynamics which were in general accurately depicted but the plot moved at a snails pace. Educational for someone who doesn't understand the many types of DV out there but tediously told. Note: many sociopaths never get violent. They just manipulate people to death!

one of her worst

This is among Danielle Steel's worst-written books. While I was pleasantly surprised by the departure from her usual happily-ever-after romance, it reads like Steel wrote one draft that was sent straight to print without anybody else reading it. But Steel knows that no matter what kind of junk she churns out people will keep buying her books, so she added in the following bit, clearly a dig at some editor who must have suggested that she cut out her usual repetitiveness in favor of more substance:

At one point in the book, Finn describes the plot of book he plans to write that's a take-off of his and Hope's life together except for the fact that it is far more complicated and involves characters and subplots, which almost all of Steel's books seem to lack: "All writers inspire themselves somewhat from real life, even if they don't admit it. [...] You don't have a brother. Or a father. You're all alone. That would be more scary. But very boring for the reader. You need layers, subplots, and more people to make a story work" (p. 311).

This clear contempt for good writing is why I always get Steel's books from the library.

I am a huge Danielle Steel fan, but I could hardly finish this book; It was predictable with no surprises at all.

Danielle Steel Strikes Again!!

I'm a major fan of Ms. Steel's works, and this was yet another "home run" for her. It's interesting readiing - make sure you have extra time, because it's hard to put down! Kudos too, to Better World Books, the Amazon seller. My books arrived quickly and were in excellent shape. You're my first choice when it comes to book buys!

A Godsend!

My mother-in-law has macular degeneration and cannot see well. She is an avid reader and absolutely adores Danielle Steel. I am commenting on the fact that I gave her the audiobook version of this book. She LOVED it and is listening to it again.
