Summary

In March 1941, Virginia Woolf filled her pockets with stones and drowned herself in England’s River Ouse. Her body was found three weeks later. What seemed like a tragic ending at the time was, in fact, just the beginning of a mystery. . . .

Six decades after Virginia Woolf’s death, landscape designer Jo Bellamy has come to Sissinghurst Castle for two reasons: to study the celebrated White Garden created by Woolf’s lover Vita Sackville-West and to recover from the terrible wound of her grandfather’s unexplained suicide. In the shadow of one of England’s most famous castles, Jo makes a shocking find: Woolf’s last diary, its first entry dated the day after she allegedly killed herself.

If authenticated, Jo’s discovery could shatter everything historians believe about Woolf’s final hours. But when the Woolf diary is suddenly stolen, Jo’s quest to uncover the truth will lead her on a perilous journey into the tumultuous inner life of a literary icon whose connection to the White Garden ultimately proved devastating.

Rich with historical detail, The White Garden is an enthralling novel of literary suspense that explores the many ways the past haunts the present–and the dark secrets that lurk beneath the surface of the most carefully tended garden.

DaVinci Code Genre

Rating: Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1

A friend recommended this because it was linked to life of Virginia Woolf. That is a loose connection. The plot is so contrived, not even reminiscent of a good BBc mystery! Don't bother if you really like a good mystery story! Give this genre a rest!

Harlequin Romance Posing as Historical Fiction

Rating: Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2

Seriously? Right down to the brooding, dark, steely millionaire who always gets his way, and the bookish, but still tingle-producing, blonde book expert. I used to enjoy my grandmother's harlequin romances, but after the age of oh, twelve, the same old story line is so tired that I felt my heart sink the second I was introduced to the down-to-earth yet beautiful and genuine heroine. The old saying "never judge a book by its cover" applies - the look and feel of the book is beautiful and seductive. The liberties it takes with Vita, Virginia, and Leonard, offensive. A good plot would have excused the slander, but not this one. Just insulting. Would get one star, but it did get me online searching the White Garden and Charleston, so I'll give it two.

Evocative And Highly Entertaining

I've long been a fan of Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries, but it was not until recently that I read The White Garden. Now I know that Ms Barron is just as accomplished in evoking a more modern world as she is that of some two hundred years earlier.

The White Garden is one of the more famous sections of the beautiful gardens at Sissinghurst Castle, Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West's marvelous creation. Nicolson and his wife were notorious for their numerous affairs with both sexes over many years and for being part of the famous pre-war Bloomsbury Set, which also included Virginia Woolf, Vita's former lover and close friend. The White Garden focuses on the events around Woolf's suicide in 1941. Barron's chief character here is an American woman professional gardener, hired to duplicate the White Garden for a wealthy man's Long Island estate. She discovers a connection between the Woolf suicide and her own grandfather, who had been a gardener at Sissinghurst. The plot is rich and detailed, weaving between gardening, literature, espionage, and romance. The writing, as is always the case with Barron, is superb. I will seek out and read other "non-Austen" works by Barron without delay in the future.

Bad bad book

Rating: Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1

Book robbed me of the hours I spent to read it. Shaky plot. Icky characters. Stupid premise. Insult to Vita, Virginia, and oh, what the heck, the poor dead dog, Martin. I'm like the other negative reviewer whose impulse was to fling the book across the room.I had expected something literary about gardening and Bloomsbury. This aint it.

Great premise, didn't care for its execution

I snatched this one up, first because the cover caught my eye, and second, the title led me to believe it was a work of historical fiction. After reading the back cover and learning that it's really a mystery set in modern times, I was still gung-ho to read it.There is a little bit of history--and that part I liked, though I have to wonder about its authenticity. But for me, the rest of it was awfully contrived--"awfully" as both an intensifier and as in "exceptionally bad and displeasing." I thought the characters were flat and the plot devices were obvious and forced: Jo thinks Peter should open a restaurant just because "'You know you want to (cook)'"? This unconvincing and out-of-left-field device enables the two to hook up at the end, of course--because Jo will design and maintain his potager! How sweet it is. And boy, did Peter manage to tie up all those loose ends at the end in his and Jo's favor. When did he have the time to get the family to sign all those papers, much less agree to his ideas? As Peter and Jo were running around trying to solve the mystery of the lost pages of the manuscript and its connection to the secret brotherhood of the Apostles, while Margaux and Marcus were teaming up with the evil manipulator Grey, I had to wonder if Barron was under the influence. The influence, that is, of the Da Vinci Code.
