Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon

Summary

From the celebrated imagination of Dean Koontz comes a powerful reworking of one of the classic stories of all time. If you think you know the legend, you know only half the truth. Now the mesmerizing saga concludes. . . .

As a devastating hurricane approaches, as the benighted creations of Victor Helios begin to spin out of control, as New Orleans descends into chaos and the future of humanity hangs in the balance, the only hope rests with Victor’s first, failed attempt to build the perfect human. Deucalion’s centuries-old history began as the original manifestation of a soulless vision–and it is fated to end in the ultimate confrontation between a damned creature and his mad creator. But first they must face a monstrosity not even Victor’s malignant mind could have conceived–an indestructible entity that steps out of humankind’s collective nightmare with powers, and a purpose, beyond imagining.

Could have been better. It felt rushed!

I absolutely loved the themes for this book. Really. The first two novels dragged me into what was, in my opinion some of the very best horror ever written!! It had everything a truly great series could possibly need. I'm sorry to report, however, that this book is the first Dean Koontz has ever written that let me down completely. While it started out well, it inevitably rushed along to a very unsatisfying end that felt as though it was simply thrown together to get the book done and over with. Bravo for an amazing theme, Boo for rushing the end of what could have been the best series I've ever read.

The Weakest of the Series

(Warning: Minor spoilers below, marked at the relevant line withs ****.)

This book was, unfortunately, a huge disappointment. The overall Amazon reviews suggest I'm not alone with that feeling - books 1 and 2 are rated pretty highly on average. Book 3, not so much.

The general problem was that the book seemed rushed and all over the place. It felt like Koontz knew where he wanted to go with book 2, but really wasn't sure where he wanted to go with the conclusion, so he wrote a somewhat stream of consciousness plotline just to get it done. Random characters are introduced and fade away, most of the plot and events do not feel connected to the atmosphere that was built in the previous book, and there is no sense of urgency driving you to turn the page as there was in part 2.

Two specific things particularly bothered me (spoilers below):

**** (1) There is a fine line between snappy banter between two characters and dialogue that is trying too hard to be clever and becomes unrealistic instead. This is probably one of those "doesn't bother everyone" things, but it's a pet peeve of mine. Many of the conversations between two of the main characters read like Gilmore Girls conversations, which just bothered me.

****(2) The single best thing about the book was a poignant end to one of the better subplots, and then Koontz ruined it with a deus ex machina "just kidding, happy ending!" a few pages later.

If you've already read the first two, it's not so terrible that you should skip it, but be prepared to skim and be mildly disappointed.

This one just didn't measure up!

I have heard a lot of negative reviews about this book but I had to take a shot on it. I loved the first two books and just recently got the 3rd and 4th novel for Father's day. So even though this book was not exactly getting the grades that the first two books were I decided to jump back into New Orleans and check and see what's going on.

This novel is kind of a filler. I don't know how else to describe it. It feels like Koontz had a lot more ideas for books 4-6 but just kind of wanted to keep things a float for this one. It almost made me wonder why he wrote the book in the first place. Not much happens in this book. Detectives Carson O'Connor and Michael Maddison along with Deucalion go... and do...well... actually... do absolutely nothing in this book. They just kind of hang out waiting on something to happen. Which is quiet a coincidence because that is exactly what the reader is doing too.

I will say that the book still has the same great humor and characters that are in the first two novels. Those two qualities are the only things that saved this novel from being an absolute turkey. I find it hard to believe that you could actually skip this novel and go right to the fourth one but I will say that so very little happen in the novel I would't be surprised if you could do just that. I rounded up to three stars but this is a **1/2 star (average) book at best.

Disappointed

After waiting years for the final chapter in this series, I was extremely disappointed.

It didn't measure up to the 1st 2 books, Dean should have written it with someone else as he did with the 1st 2 books.

Koontz's Frankenstein series

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Dean Koontz has once again proven he is the master of "Mind Blowing" For those of us who are fans of the "horror genre" in the classic sense(not the slasher bloodlust of recent years)this series is ENTHRALLING. He took a classic novel and brought it up to date in a way that is riveting and exciting as well as fast paced. Mr. Koontz I thank you for once again giving to the world hours of spellbinding entertainment through the art of the written word.If you enjoy Mr. Koontz's work as much as i do this series is a must to add to your library.Get it and ENJOY.
