Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummaryBook Description After his surprisingly glorious honeymoon in Paris, life is almost normal for Dexter Morgan. Married life seems to agree with him: he’s devoted to his bride, his stomach is full, and his homicidal hobbies are nicely under control. But old habits die hard--and Dexter’s work as a blood spatter analyst never fails to offer new temptations that appeal to his offbeat sense of justice...and his Dark Passenger still waits to hunt with him in the moonlight. The discovery of a corpse (artfully displayed as a sunbather relaxing on a Miami beach chair) naturally piques Dexter’s curiosity and Miami’s finest realize they’ve got a terrifying new serial killer on the loose. And Dexter, of course, is back in business. An Essay by Jeff Lindsay: "Dexter and Me" My mother called me one night two years ago. "Well," she said. "Now I know you’ve really made it." "Oh, really?" I said. "What do you mean?" "I’m watching Jeopardy," she said. "The answer to the last question was, ‘Who is Dexter?’" A few nights later, my sister called. "You were just on Nancy Grace," she said. "I was?" I said, very surprised. It didn’t seem like the kind of thing I would forget. "You mean me?" "No, not you," she snorted, as if I should have known better that someone like me would never be on Nancy Grace. "Dexter. Somebody’s foot washed up on a beach, and she called it a real-life Dexter moment." And then a few weeks later my agent called. "Did you hear what they named the new robot arm for the space shuttle?" he said. "Let me guess," I said. "It’s iconic," my agent said. "That’s a good thing." And it is. Dexter is iconic. But as my sister was smart enough to pick up on, I am not. I think this is a good thing. I worked in Hollywood for a dozen years, and all I can say about it is that the primitive tribes who think the camera steals your soul were really on to something. So I don’t want to be instantly recognizable--not Tom Cruise famous, not even Stephen King famous. On the other hand, if Dexter wants fame, that’s fine with me. He deserves it: he’s a fine, upstanding, hardworking guy who is good with kids, thoughtful to co-workers, and helpful around the house. And if he slips away now and then for a little bit of human vivisection--well, nobody’s perfect. I will admit, though, that lately I’ve begun to suffer what may be the world’s first Edgar Rice Burroughs Complex. Like Burroughs’s Tarzan, my character is known all over the world, and I am still anonymous. That takes some getting used to, even though there are perks. It has given me some wonderful moments--like riding into Times Square in a taxi and seeing Dexter 60 feet tall on the side of the building. "Have you seen that program?" the driver asked me. "I don’t watch much TV," I said, even though I was staring like a school boy at a peep show. "There are books, too," he said. And there are. I hope you will like them. They make wonderful gifts, too. Even better, Nancy Grace and Alex Trebek will never have to see me sweat.--Jeff Lindsay (Photo © Hilary Hemingway) |

Gelati's Scoop
I hope that everyone is having a good Sunday and enjoying themselves. We are looking forward to another big week here @ The Scoop as we get closer to the July 4th Holiday weekend. The novels we have on tap for this week are a nice mix of fiction with a nice Guest Post thrown in for good measure. Today though, I would like to concentrate on Jeff Linsay's work in the Dexter series of novels. I must admit I have not seen the show, I don't know if I would ruin the feelings I have for the novels by watching it. Does anybody watch the show? Is it a good compliment to the novels? Thanks.
I got to read them in order and I enjoyed the growth the characters showed from novel to novel. The four novels in the series to date are: Dearly Devoted Dexter, Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dexter in the Dark, & Dexter by Design. The next novel in the series, Dexter is Delicious, drops on Sept. 7th, 2010. I am really looking forward to that; it has been too long in between novels for me. The main character, Dexter, is an amazing feat of genius by Lindsay. Here we have a serial killer, but for all the right reasons. I have always enjoyed the banter that goes on between his ears with the Dark Rider, and the flashbacks with his deceased foster father. They keep Dexter on the straight and narrow, dismembering other serial killers. If you have yet to enjoy one of these incredible novels, I am not giving away any spoilers here. The plot lines are outrageous and incredibly funny. Yes, Dexter is a killer, but he has a terrific sense of himself and the humor he has about himself, his life, and the way he is and wants to be perceived is just hilarious. I have laughed out loud on numerous occasions at his antics and that of those around him.
The cast of characters Jeff Lindsay surrounds Dexter with are first rate and are incredibly funny and enjoyable. The setting in Miami seems like the right place for Dexter to be for him to hide all the bodies. The entire series of novels are great by themselves as stand alones if you cannot read them in order, but if you can, start at the beginning like I had the pleasure of doing. Dexter and Jeff Lindsay will take you on an unexpected trip that will leave you laughing, applauding the good guy even though he is a serial killer, and trying to figure out how he keeps getting himself in the situations that he does. These novels are a great summer read. They are quick, filled with lots of action and mayhem, and totally well-constructed novels. I don't hesitate to recommend the entire series. There is not a weak one in the bunch; in fact they get better and better with each one. I hope that there are many more killings in Miami; I don't want to see Dexter retire. I am enjoying him too much. Jeff Lindsay news from the man himself: The Delicious Tour will go as follows-England/Scotland/Ireland- July 8-10, United States cities in September, Toronto in October, and Australia in March.

Soooo disappointing
About half way thru this Dexter drama loses its way and Dexter turns into a weak bystander who is just along for the ride. The story was uninspiring with huge gaping holes. Not the Dexter I know and love by a long shot. Find your Mojo, Dexter.
Dexter is losing his edge ...
Dexter is a serial killer. Why isn't he killing? Barely a whiff of the Dark Passenger surfaces in Dexter by Design. Dexter seems to have lost his focus and as a result, the character is growing weaker with each book. Miami is full of bad guys, but Dexter, our sociopathic multi-tasker seems uninterested in them. It's all in the details. The fruit basket left by the concierge for Brandon Weiss has a card that says Felice Navidad?? Happy Birthday in Spanish is Felice Cumpleanos, for gosh sakes. What about all the videos Weiss had edited showing Dexter carving up Doncevic? At the end of the book, wouldn't Dex want to collect those tapes before the cops had a chance to find them? Dexter Morgan specializes in detail. The author is muddling his character. I think Mr. Lindsay would do well to concentrate less on churning out books quickly, and concentrate more on keeping Dexter true to his Design.
Over Priced
This book, like all kindle books, is not worth the $15 they want for it.
