Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummaryIn this wonderful book, Jon Katz, the owner of Bedlam Farm, learns once again about the unexpected places animals can take us. As trained hospice volunteers visiting homes and nursing facilities in upstate New York, Katz and his affectionate and intuitive border collie Izzy bring comfort and canine companionship to people who most need it. An eighty-year-old Alzheimer’s patient smiles for the first time in months when she feels Izzy’s soft fur. A retired logger joyfully remembers his own beloved dog. As Izzy bonds with patients and Katz focuses on their families, the author begins to come to terms with his own life, discovering dark realities he has never confronted. Meanwhile, Lenore, a spirited, bright-eyed black Labrador puppy, arrives at Bedlam Farm. Her genial personality and boundless capacity for affection steer Katz out of the shadows, rekindle his love of working with dogs, and restore his connection to the farm and the animals and people around him. |

good read
I was able to get into this book very easily. The chapters had a nice length where it made it easy to read for 30 minutes or so and then put it down. The story had some surprises with the author bringing in his personal struggle. It wasn't over indulgent, in my opinion, but really honest and was able to tie his personal story into that of his wonderful Izzy and Lenore. Any dog lover will be touched by this book!
Izzy and Lenore: Two Dogs, and Unexpected Journey, and Me
This book got more and more interesting and heartwarming towards the end. Jon Katz is one of those amazing authors who pours his feelings and emotions into the books that he writes. I am a dog lover as well, so when i read this, it made me happy and sad in various ways. When I am done reading a chapter, I always look forward to the next. I would recommend this book to all sorts of animal lovers- especially dog lovers- to read this book, and I guarantee you will love it as well.
izzy and lenore
Izzy and Lenore was one of the best books I have ever read.I absolutely fell in love with these two dogs. Izzy is just a remarkable dog;. and Lenore is a real sweetheart. I have read many of Jon Katz's books and love them all. I have since gotten on his website and get to visit Izzy and Lenore just about everyday. If you love dogs you will love this book.
I didn't like this.
I don't want to bad mouth this guy. He seems like a great guy, he volunteered with hospice and helped the dying, that's a noble thing to do. He was kind to animals. All these things make him a good person, but just because the things he did were noble doesn't mean they make an interesting story.
I just found the book to be boring and poorly written. I think he should of reread it before he sent it to the publisher and maybe rewrote it with a stronger tone. In a way I found him to come off as being self centered, it felt like me,me,me,me. My opinion he should of wrote himself in a darker more humbling tone. That's what depression does to you, it darkens you and humbles you. When writing anything fiction or an autobiography you need to set a tone that fits the story. His did not, it didn't sync up and it showed on the page.
I just didn't like it, I bought it for my wife and she asked me to read it. It's just my opinion. Nothing against Mr. Katz.
Jon's new dogs and new working life
I've read Jon's books before. Had him as a guest author on CSDogBookReview a couple of times and even talked with him on the phone while getting that setup. I was also fortunate to read a publisher's manuscript for Dog Days. Jon has a way of being honest and sharing his life that is not always appreciated by the positive dog trainer's of the world. Jon admits his faults and has improved his training methods.
In Izzy and Lenore we met the two new dogs in his life. Both help him in their own ways with the realization that he's dealing with depression as well as adjusting to a new life as a diabetic. Jon is honest about connecting back with a sister that he hadn't talked with in years because of her past history with addiction, but she's able to help him in ways that others can't - a shared history.
Jon's new calling as a hospice worker brought tears as he talked about some of the people that he visited. It's an amazing thing and made me think of my grandmother who is currently in hospice care and I wish that he could visit her. I'm looking forward to reading Soul of a Dog when its available from the library. Wish I could find my manuscript so I could have him sign it.
