Summary

How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.

As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.

What a great story. Who wouldn't be interested in this book? If you're a cat lover, you'll love the book. If you're a small-town person, you'll love the book. If you're looking for a good story, this book is for you. Dewey is about how a cat put smiles and more in the lives of people in Spencer, Iowa. A cat that became popular and touched the lives of everyone.

Wonderful!

A real story about love, life, death, and loving an animal. "Dewey" is a great read!

A nice cat story, but. . .

I read about this book in the Fort Dodge(Iowa) Messenger. I had never heard of Dewey the library cat, but grew up not too far from Spencer so was interested in reading the book.

It could have been much shorter and only about the cat. There was too much filler about the librarian's personal life and the history of the town. In another book they would be fine, but not very relevant to the life of a cat.

BEAUTIFUL DEWEY

My daughter bought me this book last week, she saw it in a shop and although I am a "dog" person, she thought I would enjoy it.

She was so right, the story of Dewey and Vicki's love for him, not to mention thousands of other people was inspiring.

He was such a beautiful cat and filled so many people's lives with joy( until he got lost for a few days!)

The only thing that I would say is that I was so sad to read that Vicki couldn't be with him when he was sent to sleep. They loved each other so much and shared a very special bond. I do know how hard it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet,it is heartbreaking, but having said that I still feel that as much as Vicki did for Dewey she could have done that one last thing.
I give the book full marks.

A Love Story

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

A beautiful real life story. I have a cat that looks like Dewey and that I relate to just like the author did with Dewey. Those who think that cats are standoffish and not as loving as dogs will change their minds after reading this book. I of course cried at the inevitable ending and will treasure this book. I have already starting ordering it for gifts.
