Not just another organizing book
As a professional organizer I've read a lot of organizing books and thought there was nothing new to be written on the subject. But as she does with all her books, Julie Morgenstern has looked beyond the physical manifestations of disorganization to get to the heart of what's causing the problem. And SHED takes that a step further - it helps one see that disorganization may actually be serving a purpose in the lives of people who haven't figured out where they want to go in life. This book helps people create energy and insight to move forward in life by giving them space to think - not just physical space, but space in their head that will help them change the direction of their life. This is a great book for anyone who feels stuck in their life yet knows there's a better future out there for them.
An in-depth approach to clutter of all kinds
For those of us who are professionals in the organizing business, Julie's works are always foundational reading. This book is no exception; here, she gets to the psychological heart of why people get "stuck" in their stuff and are unable to change despite their own best efforts. And she solves it! While there is never a one-size-fits-all solution, she provides a workable method to breaking through barriers that focuses on honoring the individual behind all of that stuff. If you are truly ready for transformation, this book will take you there.
Ready to change your life??
I have been tuned in to Julie's work and books for almost ten years, and I have found that each book has progressed on the one(s) before it. As someone who has worked the SHED process for myself and others I have found that it addresses the crux of disorganization: getting to the root of what the problems are, not just a superficial "fix-it" that will, inevitably, crumble in time. The SHED process looks at reasons why we sabotage ourselves, the underlying reasons why we continue to do the same things over and over again, expecting different results. It also focuses on the positive, life-affirming goals we want for ourselves, those things we wish and hope for but rarely have the courage to truly pursue. Julie has opened that door for us through this book and through the work she's doing. If you're willing to take the dive you will be amazed at the pearls to be found there.
A restatement of her other books
I very much enjoy--and use--Julie Morgenstern's books. I have her Time Management from the Inside Out and Organizing from the Inside Out and have read them several times. Many of the tips in those two books have been tremendous helps for me. And her Making Work Work also has helped me deal with some of the challenges with the workplace.
So, I purchased SHED hoping it would be just as helpful. To me, it is simply a restatement of the insights in her other books. Different acronym (SHED this time), same stuff. And, I also found the acronym very annoying after a while. It seemed like she was really reaching to get the principles she talked about to fit into the language she had devised.
Please, Julie, give us something new in the next book!
Of all the books not to be available on Kindle!
I love Julie Morgenstern's other books and was ecstatic to learn that she'd written one about getting rid of clutter. My own particular problem is hoarding books, and I recently bought my first Kindle to help me with just that problem. Makes me sad that I'll either have to get this book from the library or add to my bookish clutter, since the publishers have chosen not to make it available for Kindle readers. At least not yet. Hence no fifth star...but I trust Julie enough that I'm giving her the other four sight unseen!
