My review
The book was interesting, my boyfriend and I had a good time going over the questions.
Not as good as I would expect
This book was talked about on many relationship help websites and my fiancee and I read this together and did not think it was all that great as far as helping us to understand what we were doing wrong. This is more of a book to help you figure out your future after you get married.
Great Little Book
I purchased this book for my daughter, who is newly-engaged. Of course, I thumbed through it as soon as it arrived to check it out before giving it to her. I thought it was a great little book! Many thought-provoking questions, asked in a manner so as to promote honest, healthy discussions, rather than incite painful arguments and personal attacks. My husband and I actually went through many of the chapters for ourselves. While we are far from being newly-engaged, we will soon be "empty-nesters" and entering a new phase of our our own marriage. Reviewing the questions from that perspective really shed some light in several areas about the years to come for us! Honestly, when the book arrived and I saw how small it was, I didn't have much faith that it would be worth reading. I was pleasantly surprised! Obviously, I would recommend this book not only to young couples, but also those who have been together for a while as well.
Great book.
What a great book. I first bought it for myself and thought the questions were great. I've since bought the book for 2 friends and they really liked the thoughtfulness provoked by the questions.
best for every couple
I disagree with previous writers who say the questions are childish, or for people with a short engagement. We had a long engagement, and found this book to be quite stimulating. I will agree that some of the questions you hopefully have talked about before becoming engaged, but others we hadn't thought of.
Also, the book is supposed to spur discussion, contemplation, and conversation, and the questions are not supposed to elicit just at one sentence answer. Developing good communication is a must for any marriage, and this book is great at sparking discussion and debate. It is nice that it has questions like "What do you think a father is supposed to do?" as the answer to these can vary greatly from person to person. If you discuss these types of questions before even getting married, you will be able to have realistic expectations of your future spouse, knowing better his/her beliefs and expectations of you too. The point of this book is to find out if there are huge discrepancies in your backgrounds, morals and values, so that you can work through them before they become an issue, and destroy your relationship.
The thing I liked best about this book, is that while reading it, in answering a question, we would often get into conversation about things that were related, but not necessarily asked in the book.
I think this book is great for married couples, as well as engaged couples.
