Customer Reviews
Average Rating:
I'm sorry - I haven't had a chance to look-over it yet.
Since I haven't had a chance to look at the item yet, I will say the service/shipping was top-notch.
Different Concept
Very intersting concept - However - the KEY factor of how GOD relates to man or I should say how Man relates to GOD, is not even considered as a viable point. The Universe seems to have a greater weight than GOD!
What Cure?
We cure diseases. To say that addiction is not a disease but there is a cure for it makes no sense! Pax's story is no different than the ones you hear at AA or NA meetings. Everyone suffers. Everyone hurts the ones they love. Everyone loses everything. What else is new? This book is just an advertisement for one of the most expensive treatment centers in the country. Betty Ford Center, on the other hand, is one of the least expensive! And AA and NA are free! Twelve step programs teach that they gain members by attraction not promotion. Passages Malibu is completely self promoting! Buyer beware!
Good Read
This book was easy to read and understand. Each chapter covered the chapter title with very little repetition. This book gives anyone with an addiction hope instead of a life sentance.
carry the message ( free of charge )
Though I disagree with much of how Twelve Step Fellowships understand and practice the program as it was originally intended, there are still pearls of practical wisdom that they have to offer. Among them is this from NA`s literature : " the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel ". So true. And aside from perhaps passing a basket for whatever someone may or may not be able to contribute in the way of cash to support themselves, the primary reason for their existence is not profit, but rather altruistic. Shame on anyone or business that would seek to make a buck off the addict. And it seems that is at least partly what is going on here.
There is a better way, and it won`t bankrupt you in the process. With 26 years clean and many years of study on this subject, please bear with me for just a moment.
On his deathbed Bill Wilson was pleading with his caretakers for them to give him a drink ! This is historical fact. He essentially committed suicide by cigarette, and was a serial 13th stepper. Along with his wife and LSD dropping buddies and spiritual advisors they moved the program from one that was incredibly effective ( and had its genesis in the Judeo-Christian biblical writings thru the Oxford Group ) into a kind of universally relativistic pseudo-religion wherein man defines God to suit himself. Talk about " self-will run riot ".
And yet, despite the shortcomings of the pioneers of " the program ", the core message and method as originally intended and interpreted present what they knew to be " the cure ". They said so many times, despite Wilsons later Peabody influenced statement he inserted into the BB. Check out the website of the worlds foremost historian on early AA and its spiritual roots : [...]. Or, if in SE Ct. stop by the James Gang on Friday nites in Groton. No psychobabble, no punches pulled, no self-help group therapy or war stories. Just the Truth about the program when it didn`t fuel the revolving door syndrome, and their focus on the Solution.
Though many of the post-modern influenced AA and NA ers came to scoff, and literally try to sabotage and undermine their efforts, some have indeed stayed to pray and enjoy the fruit of complete freedom that is nearly extinct in todays 12 step recovery scene.
