Summary

Thanks to sharper diagnosis and better medicine, the future is brighter for people with bipolar disorder than in past generations. But if you or someone you love is struggling with the frantic highs and crushing lows of this illness, there are still many hurdles to surmount at home, at work, and in daily life.

*How can you learn to distinguish between the early warning signs of mood swings and the normal ups and downs of life?
*What medications are available, and what are their side effects?
*What should you do when you find yourself escalating into mania or descending into depression?
*How can you get the help and support you need from family members and friends?
*How can you tell your coworkers about your illness without endangering your career?

In this comprehensive guide, Dr. David J. Miklowitz offers straight talk that can help you tackle these and related questions, take charge of your illness, and reclaim your life. A leading researcher and clinical specialist who knows what works, Dr. Miklowitz supplies proven tools to help you achieve balance--and free yourself from the emotional and financial havoc that result when symptoms rule your life--without sacrificing your right to rich and varied emotional experiences.

This essential resource will help you and your family members come to terms with the diagnosis, recognize early warning signs of manic or depressive episodes, cope with triggers of mood swings, resolve medication problems, and learn to collaborate effectively with doctors and therapists. You'll learn specific ways to ask for support and help from your family and friends--and what to do when their "caring" feels like "controlling." For times when the going gets tough, a wealth of examples of how others have dealt with similar challenges offer new perspectives and new solutions.

Whether you have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, are considering seeking help for the first time, or have been in treatment for years, this empowering book is designed to help put you--not your illness--back in charge of your life.

You can live with BiPolar Disorder

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

This book helped me to learn about the disorder and how to live with it and work with it. It is a practical book for sufferers of the disorder. Highly recommended.

Not enough actual information

Rating: Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1

There are too many examples of individuals experiences and not actual information. I would recommend "Break the Bipolar Cycle" by Brondolo and Amador.

Godsend for me and my family regarding my bipolar disorder

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

This book is an absolute must in any Bipolar library. Survival Guide is the what this book is about. Chapters are broken down in easy to understand sections. It's easy to follow based on your symptons. No scientific goblety gook. I have had bipolar my whole life, was diagnosed about 20 years ago and I literally wore out the pages on this book when it came out.

There are other great books concerning bipolar disorder. This should be your first!

A must!

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

This book is a must for anyone with bipolar-I have purchased 29 bookson bipolar and this by far leads the way. It it written for the common layperson, not complicated or confusing. The information and suggestions provided are priceless to anyone with bipolar. You must add this to your list of things to do. Purchase and read this book cover to cover and than over again!

Solutions for Mothers and others

Rating: Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

After years of trying to find answers for behaviors that were beyond imagining, the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder came as a relief for this mother.Wanting answers was just the beginning. Being part of the solution rather than the problem was my personal goal. This book was very helpful to me. Recommended by a career professional in mental health, it is easy to follow the research and the suggestions given, for the most part. The last STAR would have been there had it been not quite so clinical. Written for the patient, it helps to be in the skin of the patient for me, the book is low key, non confrontational and kind to the patient. Most important piece of information as a family member is to not lump the person with the condition. Easy to do when the patient is in an episode. Trying to learn the dance and the steps one can take to keep the dance from becoming deadly, has been huge. There ARE solutions. If you have this disorder or are the loving mother of one who has it, there are things you can do to arrest the severity of this disorder and their is HOPE for the patient. You are NOT your disease. You ARE loved, and you CAN get better, with clear tools described in this book.
