SummaryDr. Susan Love's Breast Book has been considered the bible of breast-care books since it appeared in 1990. In 1995, Love completely updated the book in a 600-page second edition, including new biopsy and screening methods, implants, the pros and cons of hormone therapy, new discoveries in breast-cancer treatment, and many other topics. Every chapter has been rewritten, with the exception of the anatomy chapter ("The breast, I'm glad to report, is still located on the chest!"). Love presents copious medical information in a simple, welcoming style, and plentiful illustrations make the information even clearer. About two-thirds of the book deals with breast cancer: risk factors, prevention, screening, diagnosis, staging, emotions, treatment options, surgery, alternative treatments, clinical trials, and more. But the book isn't just about breast cancer. It's also about breast development, physiology, bras, nursing, sexuality--if it has to do with breasts, Love discusses it. Love also debunks breast myths: underwire bras do not cause cancer, neither do bruises or injuries; "fibrocystic disease" isn't really a disease. The book includes a wealth of resources: books, treatment centers, and organizations (but no Web sites--perhaps in the third edition?). --Joan Price |

No book can do everything, and certainly a book can't keep up with the rapid-changing research in medicine. However, this book in its various incarnations continues to serve as a good no-nonsense resource--a good place to start. It does not patronize to the reader (no syrupy 'oh poor thing' language), and it is very up-front about the side effects of the different treatments. The final decisions about what to do, if you are in that situation, will not be in a book. It will depend on your own biology, cancer stage, etc. What this book will do is tell you the biology of the breast, what is actually happening to cause cancer, and what radiation, etc, will be like. I recommend it to patients and to family members as well. From there, you will have the biological basis that one needs to decipher honest websites (like the National Library of Medicine) for the latest research...and to screen out the quacks.

This book is very informational. To bad I did not have it prior to surgery, chemo. & radiation. I just started reading the book yesterday. I had another reconstruction surgery so I could not pick up the big book.

Check out: "goddesses don't buy green bananas" [...] great book for a person who is scared and wants to connect to other women with cancer. large black and white photos and stories.
Best book for breast cancer

I have bought several books on this subject, and this is the best of them. The other books address us patients as a teacher talking to his students, but Dr. Love's book assumes the readers are educated and intelligent. Her style is clear and straightforward. The information is detailed but not so much as to be cumbersome or too scholarly. All information is supported by numerous scientific studies, listed at the end of the book, which can be a further source of information for readers who want to learn more. I found in the book much information which was not available in the other books. The glossary is very helpful, but it is not complete. For instance, the term "tumor markers" was not included, although they are mentioned in the text, as were other terms I was looking for. The book was puvlished in 2005, and of course there is much new information available since then, so I hope that a new updated version is in the works.
The Best Informational Book on Breast Cancer

As a survivor of breast cancer, I have looked at most every book I can get my hands on about this disease. If you are looking for an informational book, there is none better than this one. It covers virtually every topic and answers almost every question you can think of about breast cancer.
Some of Dr. Love's ideas (eg., epidemiology, DDT, etc.) are not supported by the establishment. However, I found her ideas very helpful. They raise important questions about causation and treatment of breast cancer.
I was able to find all the information I needed about my particular cancer in this book, along with options for treatment and questions to ask my doctor. While this book is not definitive, it is absolutely necessary for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. Other books that I found very helpful in other ways are: Art.Rage.Us.: Art and Writing by Women with Breast Cancer, The Red Devil: A Memoir About Beating the Odds, and Cancer Vixen: A True Story.
I think this is also a great book for family members and partners of those diagnosed with breast cancer. There is a lot of useful information for support and caretaking. The book is a wealth of information for anyone who is touched by this disease.
