Summary

Does it feel as if you re fighting your body to lose even one pound or just to maintain your current weight? Respected health and wellness expert and bestselling author Jillian Michaels has been there, too. So she consulted top experts in the field of metabolism and discovered that she d inadvertently been abusing her endocrine system for years. After fixing her own metabolism, she decided to share what she learned by devising this simple, 3-phase plan that engages all the weight-loss hormones (including the friendly HGH, testosterone, DHEA; and the not-so-friendly: insulin, cortisol, and excess estrogen).

In Master Your Metabolism, discover how to:
REMOVE anti-nutrients from your diet
RESTORE foods that speak directly to fat-burning genes
REBALANCE energy and your hormones for effortless weight loss

Michaels offers a wealth of information throughout, including: shopping lists and online shopping resources, hormone-trigger food charts, how to eat power nutrient foods on a budget, smart strategies for eating out, quick and easy recipes, as well as mini-programs for addressing PMS, andropause, metabolic syndrome, PCOS, and menopause.

LOVE IT

Thank you Jillian for making a book that actually makes sense. This has helped my family eat healthier and live healthier lives. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Good book from someone with experience and years of research

a shopping list, recipes, tons of resources to further your knowledge on what fuels your metabolism, learning how to eat right. Hormone trigger foods, fiber insoluable vs. soluable. Buying organic and ditching anitnutrients, and what's causing you to keep fat and not lose it.

Mastering Your Metabolism

This is one of the most important and informative book regarding the food we eat that I have ever read. She adds humor to her writing which makes it a fun as well as informative read. She gets right to the nitty gritty of reading labels and what the additives are doing to our bodies. I loved the book and I love Jillian.

Here's what happened ...

Rating: Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2

Here's what happened. Jillian Michaels, unbeknownst to herself had had a thyroid problem brewing for many years now. She had gone from one doctor to another, getting misdiagnosed and not finding any relief. Then, eureka, someone had the brain to check her thyroid!
Being a bit of an anal retentive nerd, Jillian had done lots of research along the way and found out many interesting and exciting things about the thyroid and how it affects our bodies.
After some time had passed and Jillian's doctors have established the right dose of thyroid regulating medication for Jillian, she had started seeing some relief. Around the same time, the royalties from her previous books have started decreasing. Being a savvy business lady, Jillian had thought to herself: "I already have all this great information. Why don't I put it all together, slap a catchy title on it, sensationalize a few statements, make some absolutely unrealistic suggestions for a conclusion and send it to my publisher?"
And voilĂ  - "Master your Metabolism!"
Now, don't get me wrong, if you do at least some of the things she suggests, like switching to organics if at all possible and maybe eliminating trans fats and such, you will be better off and will probably lose some weight along the way. But, the central premise of the book - that you can fix your thyroid by doing those things - is way off base!
I'm sure Jillian feels better now, but it's not because she had gone all organic and threw away all her air fresheners. She got better because she had finally received a correct diagnosis and was treated properly using western medicine, not Chinese voodoo.
If you are looking for weight loss advise - don't waste your time and money, there are better books out there. If you are just a fan of Jillian's in general and are ready to praise whatever product she puts her name on ... I can't help you with that.

Good info on making a change

Rating: Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

The author is repeating the basic health reccomendations of other popular authors and, not coincidentally, her dietary advice is pretty much along the lines of the revised food pyramid. It is also is pretty similar to the health food credo of the seventies, folks. Eat simply, eat more beans and whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies, and avoid sugar, processed and convenience foods, and chemicals that are suspected to be hormone disruptors.

If you like her no nonsense style... this book is as good a read as the others on the subject. If you need information or reinforcement that this type of eating/ health approach is worth considering, then it's good for that too. But, like all self help info..., eventually you have to get out of the reading chair and implement the info. If you can't easily name three whole grains that you can eat for dinner, or can't think of more than three bean dishes in your repitoire, or don't know how to enjoy many veggies simply and quickly cooked...than you have got some learning to do. No big deal and Mark Bittmans vegetarian cookbook would be a good start. Like everything else, once you get the hang of it this type of eating is as cheap, quick and enjoyable as you make it.

Really, the work here is in retraining your cooking and eating habits, adding exercise and stress reduction efforts, and paying attention to the products you use. For me it's worth it because this lifestyle keeps me leaner and healthier. I believe it helps keep aches and pains in my aging bod at bay. My energy levels are also stable enough to get me through the long days of work that I enjoy.

I try not to be an extremist. I enjoy a good meal with friends every week, drink some, and I don't worry about what I eat at every single meal. But, most of the time I try to eat low on food chain, choose organics, and use high quality storage containers and water bottles.

It's quite doable to implement these changes your life if you want to give it a try. You do have to be willing to work to break some of your habits and learn some new things. Good luck.
