Summary

The true story of a California couple on the brink of separation who unexpectedly find love again on the Italian Riviera.

Tired, empty, and disillusioned with married life, Susan Pohlman was ready to call it quits. As soon as she and her husband, Tim, wrap up a business trip in Italy, she planned to break the news that she wanted to end their eighteen-year marriage.

During their last day as they walked along the Italian Riviera, Tim fantasizes aloud that, perhaps, they could live there. Susan initially dismisses the notion as nonsense but is inexplicably overwhelmed with a desire to give the marriage another try. Defying all logic, the couple find a school for their children and sign a lease for an apartment. Maybe a life in such a charmed setting could help them find their way back to each other.

Together with their fourteen-year-old daughter Katie and their eleven-year-old son Matt, they trade in their breakneck Los Angeles pace for adventure and a slower, more intimate lifestyle slipping out of the constraints of the traditional American Dream into a dream of their own.

Instead of seeing each other for fleeting moments in the mornings and evenings, the family starts to spend their days together rediscovering the simple joys that bring texture and meaning to all our lives. Travel with them as they stumble upon new customs, explore medieval alleyways, browse street markets, befriend neighbors, learn to cook, and try a new language.

Halfway to Each Other is the remarkable story of an ordinary American family that inspires and offers hope that all of us who find the courage to listen to our hearts and follow our dreams can experience a new beginning.

Soul-bearing and "could not put down the book" read

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Susan's book is a soul-bearing, put-it-out-there, page-turning book. I so enjoyed her engaging, insightful writing style. I keep buying the book for friends and family in order to share this wonderful read. I just want to pass it along to everyone. Susan has done a fabulous job of telling about a very struggling time in her life with true feeling, but yet a great sense of humor. The book is inspiratinal and magical. Thank you Susan for sharing your story and giving us this gift. I hope you pen another great family story.

true to my experience of living in Italy too!

I thought this was a lovely book that spoke deep truths even when the truth revealed how spoiled we Americans are!
Marriages are as much work as raising kids and finding a place to call home...this book is a wake up call.

From a Man's Point of View

Even though HALFWAY TO EACH OTHER is definitely "chick-lit," this macho dude thoroughly enjoyed it.

I found Susan Pohlman's memoir of her family's year's sabbatical on the Italian Riviera to be profound, intelligent, brave, beautiful, poetic, moving and very funny. I would judge it far superior to UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN. Though it has many messages, one that comes home to me as a husband and father is how important--really all-important--intimate family relationships are, relationships which can only be built by sharing time together.

Given her literary gifts and insights into people, Susan Pohlman is someone to watch as her writing career flowers. I'd love to see her try her hand at a novel.

I purchased this book in good order. I wanted to read the book as I visited Italy two years ago. I loved the book and it brought back memories for me.
