A feel good book
I started reading this book, and then I decided to give it to my mother, who is currently going through "empty nest syndrome" since her youngest just left. I figured it would be something she could relate to and thus better review than myself. Reading through a few chapters myself and then getting her response, it's essentially just as the title says. It is decently-written, heart-felt and does what books are supposed to do at different stages in our lives - books let us know that we are not alone. Having said that, this may not change your life and it may not be for everyone, but if you're looking for a book to read that's on the lighter side, then take a chance on this one.
It's interesting, because just before this I had read "The Slippery Year" by Gideon. This book follows the same sort of situation.
A Gift to All Who Read It
The Gift of an Ordinary Day spoke to me in so many ways. Being a mother of teenagers myself, it was extremely helpful to read Kenison's struggles with her sons and how she dealt with them. She didn't offer answers, but rather different ways of looking at situations. Her decision to move in with her parents while her house was being built was one I could not ever imagine, yet reading about it helped me appreciate my own parents. As a woman trying to find my way with growing children who don't need me as much and the change that creates in a marriage and my own identity, I found this book to be like a good friend---offering again a different and positive perspective.
After reading it, I was fortunate enough to hear Kenison read portions of the book at a local bookstore. Listening to her brought tears to my eyes. I immediately bought several copies of the book to give as gifts and a CD of her reading it. The Gift of an Ordinary Day is truly a gift to all who real it!
Who better to read her own tale than author Katrina Kenison
Who better to read her own tale than author Katrina Kenison. She deftly takes us on a journey into her life. We walk by her side through the natural changes of life. We watch as her family grows up.
Most women will relate to Kenison's story. I have three grown children and went through similar life changes. I remember when my children started school I felt lost without their tiny bodies in the house. The next big adjustment was when they left for college. After that came grandparenthood. Change does not come easily and I struggled against each one. Once I adjusted I settled in and I enjoyed it.
There are so many ways I can relate to this book. Kenison tells of wanting a simpler life, uprooting her family and moving from Boston to New Hampshire. She tells of falling in love with a dilapidated cabin on 80 acres. My husband and I dreamed of raising our children on a farm. We purchased 70 acres, cleared it, built a home, dug several ponds and enjoy what we consider the idyllic life. Kenison has a view of the mountains; we have a view of rolling hills. Life is simpler, life is peaceful, and life is what we make it.
Kenison finds her favorite times are the ordinary ones. I smiled as she discusses walking into town for a cup of tea. Refinishing the doors of the house brings great satisfaction. Cooking a meal for someone else brought a sense of purpose.
Readers are there as the Kenison family struggles to build a house on a one family income. They come to understand that a house is just a house, they as a family will make it a home.
Katrina Kenison is offering readers a gift. One that I hope many will accept. The gift is the lessons she learned on slowing down and enjoying life. Her book is well written and women will relate to it. I found listening to An Ordinary Gift to be relaxing and rather peaceful. We all need to slow down and enjoy The Gift Of An Ordinary Day.
Trail Markers for the Practice of Letting Go--Great Holiday Gift Idea for all Parents!
It's always both comforting and practical to have a guide who goes before you, marking the trail and highlighting some of the beauty and challenges of the adventure. Katrina Kenison offers parents insights, ideas, and questions to ponder as they travel the life long practice of letting go. While this book focuses on letting older children fly away from the nest, the practice of letting go really begins at the time of their birth. The author's beautiful description of universal, ordinary, everyday moments, felt like it was speaking directly to me. I'm going to send this book to many parents this holiday season!
