Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummarySarah Vowell exposes the glorious conundrums of American history and culture with wit, probity, and an irreverent sense of humor. With Assassination Vacation, she takes us on a road trip like no other -- a journey to the pit stops of American political murder and through the myriad ways they have been used for fun and profit, for political and cultural advantage. From Buffalo to Alaska, Washington to the Dry Tortugas, Vowell visits locations immortalized and influenced by the spilling of politically important blood, reporting as she goes with her trademark blend of wisecracking humor, remarkable honesty, and thought-provoking criticism. We learn about the jinx that was Robert Todd Lincoln (present at the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley) and witness the politicking that went into the making of the Lincoln Memorial. The resulting narrative is much more than an entertaining and informative travelogue -- it is the disturbing and fascinating story of how American death has been manipulated by popular culture, including literature, architecture, sculpture, and -- the author's favorite -- historical tourism. Though the themes of loss and violence are explored and we make detours to see how the Republican Party became the Republican Party, there are all kinds of lighter diversions along the way into the lives of the three presidents and their assassins, including mummies, show tunes, mean-spirited totem poles, and a nineteenth-century biblical sex cult. |

Quirky History
I really enjoyed The Wordy Shipmates a lot more than this book, which jumps around a lot more from place to place and past to present, but Vowell is always amazingly well-versed in her history and her sense of humor is one of a kind.
Sarah Vowell; My New Favorite Author
Sarah Vowell is my new favorite author. Assassination Vacation is fabulous. It's informative and respectful, and it's a hoot. Ms. Sarah has obviously done her homework, historically speaking, and she shares her knowledge and insights cleverly. I am fascinated by the way she thinks, and I, for one, am delighted that she decided to spend her vacations visiting sites of famous assassinations and researching the the connections between such things as pre-marital sex, Oneida tea-pots and President Garfield's assassination. I mean, who knew?
A fun read-- though skews mostly to Lincoln's assassination
I really liked this book, but I think it gives relatively less time to Garfield and McKinley.
not a book club book
read this book for book club. it was a big dud. probably wouldnt have enjoyed it otherwise as well.
She went on, and on, and on...
Here's the thing -- I love, love, love "The Partly Cloudy Patriot." It might be one of my top 10 books ever. And, after reading "Assassination Vacation," now I know why.
I think Sarah Vowell is hilarious in small, diverse doses. But "Assassination Vacation" was a different kettle of fish. I have to admit that the singularity of her historical fascination/geekiness on the topic of presidential assassinations got on my nerves after a while. I got bored and skipped a few paragraphs here and there, to be honest.
I kept thinking back to her description of Al Gore in the "Partly Cloudy Patriot" as a smarty pants, which I agree is why he probably "lost" the election to George Bush. (He didn't, really, but that's another story...) There was a tinge of smarty-pantedness here, and, frankly, I got annoyed. But if you are really interested in the minutiae of presidential assassinations, this is the book for you.
PS -- lest anyone think I am a conservative crank, I am, most emphatically, not.
