Summary

Melding superb research and the extraordinary expedition photography of Frank Hurley, The Endurance by Caroline Alexander is a stunning work of history, adventure, and art which chronicles "one of the greatest epics of survival in the annals of exploration." Setting sail as World War I broke out in Europe, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by renowned polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, hoped to become the first to cross the Antarctic continent. But their ship, Endurance, was trapped in the drifting pack ice, eventually to splinter, leaving the expedition stranded on floes--a situation that seemed "not merely desperate but impossible."

Most skillfully Alexander constructs the expedition's character through its personalities--the cast of veteran explorers, scientists, and crew--with aid from many previously unavailable journals and documents. We learn, for instance, that carpenter and shipwright Henry McNish, or "Chippy," was "neither sweet-tempered nor tolerant," and that Mrs. Chippy, his cat, was "full of character." Such firsthand descriptions, paired with 170 of Frank Hurley's intimate photographs, which are comprehensively assembled here for the first time, penetrate the hulls of the Endurance and these tough men. The account successfully reveals the seldom-seen domestic world of expedition life--the singsongs, feasts, lectures, camaraderie--so that when the hardships set in, we know these people beyond the stereotypical guise of mere explorers and long for their safety.

Alexander reveals Shackleton as an inspiring optimist, "a leader who put his men first." Throughout the grueling ordeal, Shackleton and his men show what endurance and greatness are all about. The Endurance is a most intimate portrait of an expedition and of survival. Readers will possess a newfound respect for these daring souls, know better their unthinkable toil and half-forgotten realm of glory. --Byron Ricks

Just a re-write of Alfred Lansing's book with pretty pictures

Rating: Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2

This book is a coffee table re-write of the book "Endurance," by Alfred Lansing. The photos are nice but go to the Royal Geographic Society's website and you'll find them ALL there. The author's conjecture wrongly diminishes some of the key persons. Ords Lee was severely handled. The factual record doesn't support a good deal of the author's assertions. The author also suffers from an acute case of anthropomorphism which is plain silly in light of crew's obvious need of having to kill and eat animals to survive. Read Lansing's account. In the credits, the author dismisses Lansing's novel as "rip-roaring" insinuating Lansing's work is nothing more than boy's adventure novel. Readers should note Lansing was able to actually interview surviving crew members. He tells the story as it happened. His material is better moving and keeps the reader far more engaged. Surprising how many great ratings exist on this coffee table book re-write - reflects the sorry state of literacy in God's wonderful world. Thank you.

Beautifully written, Shackleton's adventure takes the reader to the Antarctic and proceeds to convince you that Mr. Shackleton was a truly exceptional person and explorer. You will read several paragraphs aloud to anyone who will listen. Well done, Ms. Alexander!

Excellent Book for the Adventurer

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

The book is a story about a ship and its crew traveling to the Antarctic Continent where they become shipwrecked and the crew has to fight for its survival. The story is one of adventure, and shows what can be achieved when people pull together.
The book is beautifully written and has rare photos that help capture the spirit of that journey.

Nice Illustrations, well written

Good book. Not quite as enjoyable or accessible as the 1959 story penned by Alfred Lansing, but well worth reading.
