Summary

New York Times best-selling author Cornel West is one of America’s most provocative and admired public intellectuals. Whether in the classroom, the streets, the prisons, or the church, Dr. West’s penetrating brilliance has been a bright beacon shining through the darkness for decades. Yet, as he points out in this new memoir, “I’ve never taken the time to focus on the inner dynamics of the dark precincts of my soul.”

That is, until now.

Brother West is like its author: brilliant, unapologetic, full of passion yet cool. This poignant memoir traces West’s transformation from a schoolyard Robin Hood into a progressive cultural icon. From his youthful investigation of the “death shudder” to why he embraced his calling of teaching over preaching, from his three marriages and his two precious children to his near-fatal bout with prostate cancer, West illuminates what it means to live as “an aspiring bluesman in a world of ideas and a jazzman in the life of the mind.” Woven together with the fibers of his lifelong commitment to the prophetic Christian tradition that began in Sacramento’s Shiloh Baptist Church, Brother West is a tale of a man courageous enough to be fully human, living and loving out loud.

Gift of West

At last the gift of our profound Brother West. The memoir gives the reader everything you have been wondering about West journey in his personal life. I can't put the book down yet I don't want it to end. It stretched me and enriched my perception of this brillant, poignant man.

Walking Through Shallow Water

Rating: Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2 Score = 2

I purchase this book with great anticipation, but was literally stunned by the absence of serious thinking, the constant name dropping, the sharing of the names of female companions and lovers, the sharing of a life choices that can only be described as sad, and the incredibly poor editing. I have deep respect and love for Dr. West, but some of the things that he shares are hard to believe. We are asked to believe that a person who has made many millions of dollars from a speaking schedule that includes almost two hundred speeches a year at between $7,500 to $15,000 per speech and more, a salary from his tenured professorships at Harvard and Princeton, and teaching positions at other colleges and universities, financial awards, and major selling books has so little money that he can not afford a room and must sleep in "Central Park." As a person who was born and raised in Harlem and East Elmhurst, New York, I have a difficult time accepting that my millionaire brother can not afford a room, find a place to sleep on the Princeton campus or in that community or have a friend provide him with a place to lay his head. Why does the world need to know that he slept with Kathleen Battle or Michelle Wallace? Did they agree to have this information shared with the world? This is a sad and shallow book by an otherwise wonderful brother.

What a great life!

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

This book outlines the life of an extraordinary man -- overcoming difficulties, learning at an early age to speak his mind. He has stood his ground under political pressure at times, always maintaining his staunch ethical base.

Dr. Cornel West: An Authentic Blues Man

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Today I read Dr. Cornel West's blues memoir "Living and Loving Out Loud." I got to talking to myself,to the music,to the language; it became life. Dr. West, is indeed, a blues man.He writes with a blues sensibility as he responds to the marrow of struggle and triumph in his own life and in the lives of others. The memoir compels memory of the grave diggers in Mississippi who make, and I mean make, blues music using old brooms. Dr. West--"Corn"-- is a blues man like the Mississippi grave diggers. He makes life out of the intellectual and practical notes he has been given. He does not make excuses for his frail humanity, his mistakes; he seeks to understand, to grow, to continue living. This book needs to rest on the shelves of us all. It is pedagogical: I found myself creating a book list of the compassionate thinkers named in the book. The book is spiritual; it calls you in; it compels a response. I heard myself humming "Amen" to Dr. West's refusal to allow Malcolm to be disrespected; I heard myself whispering a prayer for him as he recounted his challenge with prostate cancer; I found myself nodding as I repeated in my memory the gifts of love and support given to West by his family and the love he shares with his children. This memoir is bathed in an authentic anointing of an African American male child shaped into a man, groomed to be a thinker whose life is dedicated to helping each one of us experience and cherish the gem of the mind. Indeed, Dr. West is "living and loving out loud." Like a blues man traveling down the train tracks, he is calling us to join him. That deserves an AMEN!
