Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon

Summary

Filled with inspiring stories, insightful interviews, and stunning color photography from Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Rick Rickman, this incredible book showcases the unique power and grace of today's senior athletes. Spanning a broad spectrum of sports, the profiles inside paint an intimate portrait of senior swimmers, runners, and others who continue to compete well into their later years. Also including an in-depth look at the spirited and increasingly popular U.S. Senior Games, The Wonder Years triumphs over the conventional wisdom that growing older means slowing down.

Amazing depiction of older athletes, Truly Inspirational

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

This book is a photo essay of athletes who are over 50 years old according to the calender but not according to their desire, athletic ability and drive. As one who reached the 50 milestone recently, I can attest to the fact that without continuous activity the body starts to break down. It is more difficult to stay active at a vigorous level as one gets older which makes the athletes featured in this book all the more inspirational and incredible. The photography by Rick Rickman is great and Donna Wares' writing brings insight into the motivation of the featured athletes. A real eye opener and highly recommended!

Inspiring at any age!

What a wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys sports or fitness (or would look great on your own coffeetable)! The athletes profiled are incredibly inspiring; the stories make you wonder what the heck you are doing sitting on the couch reading a book. The photography is incredible too; the use of light and action really helps to tell the story of each person too. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Great gift- inspiring.

This book would make a wonderful gift for any person who feels as if it's "too late" to follow their dreams. This is an oversized, glossy book full of photographs and stories of athletes who continue to excel at their chosen sport as the years go by.

I'm a swimmer who often feels really guilty about not pursuing the sport more aggressively while I was in high school and college- I feel as if I missed my chance to compete and excel in the sport. Reading this book made me realize that there is still *so much* time for me to pursue my dreams of becoming a good athlete. It also reminded me it's NEVER too late to follow a dream.

Wonderful book for anyone, especially those of us who feel as if we missed our chance to make a dream come true.

A Testament to the Human Spirit

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

More than just a record in pictures and paragraphs of older athletes who refuse to slow down, this amazing book is a testament to the resilience of the human body and the power of a "can-do" attitude. In profile after profile, a central theme emerges, that of ability and accomplishment being related less to one's chronological age than to one's willingness to persevere and desire to achieve.

I was originally attracted to this book because of my association and friendship with Olympic gold medalist Peter Snell, who won prizes in track during the 1960 and 1964 competitions. I was in an exercise study that Dr. Snell conducted at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas in the middle of the present decade. During the almost two years that I was trained and worked out with Peter, I was constantly amazed at his incredible physique and athletic ability. Despite the fact that he was in his late 60's, he had an enviable body, and was still dedicated to running, bicycling, and to the sport of orienteering.

The athletes who are featured in "The Wonder Years" are equally inspiring. Rick Rickman's photographs capture them in beautiful detail, and their individual stories are by turns thought-provoking, touching, and - in the truest sense of the word - awesome. Highly recommended!

Yes you can!

Great book to inspire every "experienced" athletic and weekend warrior. These athletes are a tribute to "a life well led" and gives inspiration for us all. I just saw a news blip about Jack Lalanne turning 95. He looks strong and vibrant for his age.

We all have the same ability to live our lives to the fullest no matter what our current situation.

Nice photos and inspirational text. Good birthday present for someone turning 50.
