Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummaryIn late December 2008, Ian Halperin told the world that Michael Jackson had only six months to live. His investigations into Jackson's failing health made headlines around the globe. Six months later, the King of Pop was dead. Whatever the final autopsy results reveal, it was greed that killed Michael Jackson. Friends and associates paint a tragic picture of the last years and days of his life as Jackson made desperate attempts to prepare for the planned concert series at London's 02 Arena in July 2009. These shows would have earned millions for the singer and his entourage, but he could never have completed them, not mentally, and not physically. Michael knew it and his advisors knew it. Anyone who caught even a fleeting glimpse of the frail old man hiding beneath the costumes and cosmetics would have understood that the London tour was madness. Why did it happen this way? After an intense five year investigation, New York Times bestselling author Ian Halperin uncovers the real story of Michael Jackson's final years, a suspenseful and surprising thriller. |

Average Rating:
Pure trash
The only positive thing from Halperin's book is his picking apart of the allegations of child abuse from 1993 and 2003 and paints MJ as innocent, even though he set out to prove him guilty.
I wasn't going to put one more dime in Ian Halperin's pocket so I read this book for free at the library. All I can say to all the allegations of poor health is in the 8 months since his death, now that This is It has been released and the autopsy report has been published-- I hope that Halperin is feeling like the worm that he is.
Michael is clearly on top of his game in This is It. A sickly depressed man could not come up with the magnificent performances that were going to be part of the show. His performance of Billie Jean at the end wowed everyone who watched. His loving kindness and humility has been more than well documented from those who worked with him through this and other projects. More of those stories have come out than the few MJ/AEG conspiracy theories in existance.
The autopsy report revealed a man relatively healthy for a 50 year old. No drugs in his system other than what Murray gave him to attempt to get him to sleep. Since an autopsy report is scientific proof of MJ's condition, Halperin's allegations are laughable at best.
As far as homosexuality, in the 8 months since he died, only 1 person came out claiming to be a gay lover, but quickly faded. More women have come out claiming to be romantically attached to MJ than men. Most written accounts of those who witnessed Michael over the years only saw him admire women. You can just google to find these. His music speaks of love with a woman, girl.. never vague as to whom his desire is directed to. Just watch performance videos and fan sightings of where he lovingly hugs women. And as to Halperin's reference that he thought MJ was making a pass at him (in front of his children no less) all I can say is ...you wish. MJ loved to hug people and any touch of his hand on yours was merely a friendly, loving gesture, not sexual.
Refrain from putting money into Halperin's pocket for this book or any others he writes. If you must read out of sick curiosity like I did..get it for free at the library or take a few weeks to read it at Borders or Barnes and Noble for free without paying for it.
SOUNDS LIKE THE TRUTH TO ME!
THERE ARE SEVERAL PARTS OF THIS BOOK THAT GRABBED ME....BIG TIME! ESPECIALLY WHERE IT TALKS ABOUT MICHAEL BEING CONNECTED TO THE NATION OF ISLAM, AND HOW THEY GOT HIM TO RENT THE HOLMBY HILLS ESTATE FOR $100,000 A MONTH. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE COSTED MORE THAN $25,000 A MONTH TO RENT! DR. TOHME TOHME (NO REAL DOCTOR) TOOK OVER MICHAEL'S LIFE ALSO. IT IS REPORTED THAT MICHAEL WAS SCARED OF HIM, AND WANTED NOTHING ELSE TO DO WITH HIM. HE FIRED TOHME TOHME, AND HE DID NOT TAKE THE FIRING VERY WELL. THIS GUY HAS BEEN KNOWN TO MAKE THREATS TOWARDS PEOPLE IN THE PAST AND MAY HAVE MADE SOME TOWARDS MICHAEL AS WELL. YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY! OTHER INTERESTING STUFF INCLUDE: ONE OF MICHAEL'S DOCTORS ADMITTING THAT HE(MICHAEL) HAD A SERIOUS LUNG PROBLEM THAT WOULD NEED A TRANSPLANT, BUT MICHAEL WAS TOO WEAK TO GET IT, FOUR DAYS BEFORE HIS DEATH, MICHAEL TOLD SOMEONE IN HIS CAMP THAT HE WANTED TO DIE, THAT MICHAEL TOLD HIS DAUGHTER, PARIS NOT TO BE MAD AT HIM IF HE DID NOT MAKE IT TO FATHER'S DAY, AND THE REAL SHOCKER: TWO WEEKS BEFORE HIS DEATH, MICHAEL CALLED A CLOSE RELATIVE OF THE LEGENDARY JAMES BROWN, AND TOLD HIM "GOODBYE." THAT HE(MICHAEL) FELT THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT TO LIVE FOR. MICHAEL WAS CRYING SOMETHING AWFUL. IT WAS ENOUGH TO BRING THIS MAN (BROWN'S RELATIVE) AND I TO TEARS. IT SOUNDED LIKE MICHAEL HAD GIVEN UP ON LIFE, EITHER BECAUSE HE WAS ILL....MAYBE WITH A CONDITION THAT HE WOULD NEVER GET OVER, AND HE FIGURED WHAT THE HELL....I AM GOING TO DIE ANYWAY. MAYBE HIS LIFE WAS BEING THREATENED--LATOYA SAYS THAT MICHAEL TOLD HER SEVERAL TIMES THAT HE WAS AFRAID FOR HIS LIFE. WHATEVER HAPPENED....JUST GET THE BOOK, AND BELIEVE ME....YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME PUTTING IT DOWN!
Poorly written
Poorly written. I also do not like the way he brings up the other books he's written as though he wants us to go out and buy them since this one is so good. I wish I could get my money back. I don not recommend this book, but I do recommend Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness the whole story. I'm just about to finish it. I really think it is written very well. I could have finished all 700+ pages in 2 days if I didn't have a family. It was hard to put down. I learned a lot.
Unmasked; The Final Years of Michael Jackson
Before MJ's death I never had much interest in him. I'm pushing 60 years old so I've known of him since he hit the scene in 1968. I was curious why his life went so wrong. One day I was in a bookstore to use up a gift card so I bought this book. It seemed to me it would be unbiased. Little did I know it would lead me into becoming a big time fan! The author raised more questions than he answered. Is this a pro MJ book? No. Is it unbiased? Pretty much so. He does not pretend to be an MJ expert but he makes you want to know more about MJ. One thing Halprin was clear about was his opinion that MJ was not a child molester. I can't believe Halprin thought that MJ might have been gay. I've done a lot of research and am convinced MJ was not gay. Untrusting of women, yes; shy around women, yes; too busy for a girlfriend, yes. I say thank you to Halprin for making me curious about MJ. It's because of Halprin that I now have read over a dozen books about MJ and have spent hours watching performance and interview videos on youtube. I even bought MJ's Opus. I plan to donate my MJ books to the local library after I've read them. It is a way to get out that he was innocent and that his kind of entertainment talent only happens once. I am proud to be a new fan; post MJ's death. To keep his legacy alive we need to spread the word. I'd like to see a book dedicated solely to MJ's humanitarian deeds. He was such a loving and caring person.
Waste of money
Occasionally I like to pick up a celebrity biography; this book would be better suited in the fiction section. There's a lot of hype and it closes with a flop pretty much sums it up.
