Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummaryIn American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson delivers a moving and achingly funny memoir of living the American dream as he journeys from the mean streets of Glasgow, Scotland, to the comedic promised land of Hollywood. Along the way he stumbles through several attempts to make his markāas a punk rock musician, a construction worker, a bouncer, and, tragically, a modern dancer. To numb the pain of failure, Ferguson found comfort in drugs and alcohol, addictions that eventually led to an aborted suicide attempt. (He forgot to do it when someone offered him a glass of sherry.) But his story has a happy ending: in 1993, the washed-up Ferguson washed up in the United States. Finally sober, Ferguson landed a breakthrough part on the hit sitcom The Drew Carey Show, a success that eventually led to his role as the host of CBS's The Late Late Show. By far Ferguson's greatest triumph was his decision to become a U.S. citizen, a milestone he achieved in early 2008, just before his command performance for the president at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. In American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson talks a red, white, and blue streak about everything our Founding Fathers feared. |

Average Rating:
Love him! Love his story!
I enjoy watching Ferguson and wanted to know more about him. Hearing his story in his own voice is just the right touch.
Great Laugh's
If you'r looking for a pick me up, then this is the book to be reading. Deep in thought, but very funny.
The puppets on his late show would hate it
This breezy look at a top comic seems lazy and stuck in the past to me.Who cares who the 3 other drunks were on that night at the party? Too much triviality and snarky cheap hits at Pres. Bush who BTW kept America free of all terrorists every single day since 9/11. No focus at all went to the gratitude he and all immigrants should feel to this, the greatest nation of them all.
A complete delight
This man is a delight to watch and now I can say a delight to read. Very honest and heartfelt, especially when it comes to his feelings about becoming a citizen.
Smooth as Silk-Spun from Beaten Reality
Want to read about a real person who allows himself to reveal his pores and flaws? "American on Purpose" is an easy read with all the humor and spontaneity one has come to expect from the impromptu Late Late Show host. Here's a fellow that dismantles the 'foreigner syndrome', helps us get us past our misperceptions, and forces us to encounter our cultural tendencies toward histrionics. Deftly written by the hand of a fellow traveler that is not afraid of the bumps in the road.
Buy his book - support his art; he's witty, quirky, fun, and therapy for a world that thinks too much of itself.
