Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummaryThere are many words to describe Michael J. Fox: Actor. Husband. Father. Activist. But readers of Always Looking Up will soon add another to the list: Optimist. Michael writes about the hard-won perspective that helped him see challenges as opportunities. Instead of building walls around himself, he developed a personal policy of engagement and discovery: an emotional, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual outlook that has served him throughout his struggle with Parkinson's disease. Michael's exit from a very demanding, very public arena offered him the time-and the inspiration-to open up new doors leading to unexpected places. One door even led him to the center of his own family, the greatest destination of all. The last ten years, which is really the stuff of this book, began with such a loss: my retirement from Spin City. I found myself struggling with a strange new dynamic: the shifting of public and private personas. I had been Mike the actor, then Mike the actor with PD. Now was I just Mike with PD? Parkinson's had consumed my career and, in a sense, had become my career. But where did all of this leave Me? I had to build a new life when I was already pretty happy with the old one.. Always Looking Up is a memoir of this last decade, told through the critical themes of Michael's life: work, politics, faith, and family. The book is a journey of self-discovery and reinvention, and a testament to the consolations that protect him from the ravages of Parkinson's. With the humor and wit that captivated fans of his first book, Lucky Man, Michael describes how he became a happier, more satisfied person by recognizing the gifts of everyday life. |

Laborious Read:
It's not politically correct to dislike something Michael J. Fox has worked on, especially considering he's working so hard to overcome a difficult disease. However, this book didn't do anything for me.
If I wasn't a huge fan of Fox's work in Hollywood, I never would have made it past page 20. The crux of this book is that while MJF is no longer as active as an actor, he now has a full life pursuing a cure for Parkinson's. I get it, and I admire it, but we don't need MJF telling us this over a 288 page book. The meat of this book could have been told in a 10 minute interview on 60 Minutes, or in a feature length article in Rolling Stone.
I will always have fond memories of Back to the Future, Family Ties, and Spin City, and will always admire Fox for the way he has championed the fight against Parkinson's. But that doesn't mean I have to like this book. I didn't.
Politics???
As a person who is currently fighting her way back from a brain injury (TBI), I thought this would be a wonderful book. I was very much looking forward to it actually. Boy, was I let down! Sorry Michael, I must not be as big into the politics as you are:( I thought it was going to be more about being optomistic. You can see why I thought that surely with the title of the book. He's a very good person doing very good things for others with problems. I just wish he would write a book about that instead!!!
Who Doesn't Love Michael J Fox?
First book by him I read. Personally, I felt this went way too hard into the politics of his fight against Parkinsons. I resepct and admire his fight, but found the political stories less interesting then his stories about struggling with daily life and how difficult it was doing Spin City, Scrubs and others. I had no idea what he was going through during these filmings. I find these stories inspirational, uplifiting, funny and sad all at the same time making these parts of the book a great read. Sadly, the rest of it seemed like "vote Democrat for stem cell research". We all have an opinion on this, so unless your a democrat and for stem cell research (no comment on my opinion) you might be a bit offended or at least bored with parts of this book. I don't blame him one bit and have no regrets about purchasing it, I just hope his next book talks about his life, family and struggles he overcomes!
Parkinson's OK I get it!
I love Michael J. Fox. BUT this book is bad, if you take the word Parkinson's out of it, it would be a pamphlet. I was disappointed it covers so little of his life even thought it portrays itself as an insight into his life.

If you have Parkinson Disease this book helps you understand how Michael has coped and helps the individual reading relate to him
